Baseball Falls at No. 19 Marietta

MARIETTA, Ohio - Marietta College showed why it is ranked No. 19 in the most recent D3Baseball.com Top 25 Poll as the Pioneers defeated the Wilmington College baseball team 18-4 in eight innings and 16-0 in seven innings to sweep an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) twinbill at Pioneer Park on Saturday.

The Quakers took a brief 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Tyler Shaneyfelt singled to open the game, advanced to second on a wild pitch, took third on a passed ball and scored on a groundout to third from Dominic Depa. The Pioneers answered immediately, plating four runs on three hits and three walks off of Aaron Boster in the bottom of the first.

Wilmington wouldn't lead the rest of the day. Marietta scored at least a run in seven of the next eight innings in game one and plating three-plus runs in four of the six innings the hosts batted in game two, which featured a lighting delay lasting over 90 minutes.

In game one, Shaneyfelt and Evan Kelsey both had two singles while four other Quakers - Jared Lammert, Caleb Scott, Jacob Feltner and Evan Eilerman - had a single. The Pioneers pounded out 17 hits with Alex Richter, Brett Carson and Trent Valentine hitting home runs. Cole Rieman finished 3-for-3 with a walk, two RBIs and three runs scored. Trent Valentine improved to 4-0 with a quality state of six innings and two earned runs allowed while Boster fell to 3-3.

The nightcap followed a similar script as Marietta scored five runs in the bottom of the first and led throughout. Feltner was the lone Quaker to finished with two hits while Owen Baumann and Joel O'Brien connected for a double each. Nick Bonnizzio finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs at the top of the Pioneer orcrd while Rieman and Matthew Busby also had three-hit games at the bottom of the lineup. Kail Hill pitched five innings to notch is seventh victory of the season while Trent Mendenhall dipped to 2-5 pitching one inning.

Wilmington (11-19, 1-9 OAC) hosts Capital University on Wednesday.
