WILMINTGON, Ohio – The Wilmington College baseball team dropped game one of a weekend series with Alma College, falling to the Scots 10-6 on Saturday afternoon.

Game two was suspended due to darkness in the middle of the seventh inning. It will be finished tomorrow (Sunday).

Alma, which entered the game scoring over seven runs per game, plated a run in each of the first two innings. Wilmington starter Luke Chappie, which stranded five runners in the first two innings, was hit with two unearned runs in the third and four runs on three hits in the fourth. He exited the game surrendering seven earned runs on seven hits as Jacob Griewahn induced an inning-ending double play.

Trailing 7-0, Caleb Scott opened the scoring for the Quakers in the bottom of the fifth with a two-RBI double to left center that scored both Nick Silvis and Gavin Perkins. After neither team scored in the sixth, Wilmington scored another run, this one unearned, in the bottom of the seven.

Leading 7-3, Alma got those runs back with a three-run, three-hit eighth inning. A Matt Garza single to left center in the bottom of the inning scoring Luke Kleindl made the score 10-4 after eight complete. Wilmington would plate two runs in the bottom of the ninth, on a sacrifice fly from Nick Silvis and an RBI-single from Scott, but a popup and fly out ended the game.

Dylan Dzendzel earned the win for Alma, allowing two earned runs with nine strikeouts in seven innings. Chappie took the loss for Wilmington, allowing 10 hits and seven earned runs in 3.1 innings pitched.

Perkins and Scott finished with multi-hit contests for the Quakers with Scott driving in three runs. Zach Schirmer and Max Trucks both had three-hit games for the Scots.

In game two, Alma got on the board again in the top of the inning on a sacrifice fly, but this time, Wilmington's offense scored in each of the first three innings. Kleindl and Scott tallied RBI hits in the bottom of the first while Perkins singled home Austin Turner in the second. Leading 3-1, the Quakers doubled their lead in the third by scoring on a passed ball and an RBI-single from Turner.

Alma scored one run in each of the fourth and fifth innings, but Joe Legin got one of those back with an RBI-double up the middle scoring Kleindl. After neither team scored in the sixth, things unraveled for Wilmington in the seventh. The Scots battled around and scored six runs to turn a 6-3 deficit into a 9-6 advantage.

The final two-and-a-half innings along with game three of the series will be played Sunday.
