WILMINGTON, Ohio - Heidelberg University scored 31 runs over a six-inning span to sweep the Wilmington College baseball team 14-6 and 22-2 in an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) series on Saturday.
Game one started well for the hosts as the Fightin' Quakers scored a run in the third on an RBI-single from Antonio Miller and extended their lead to 3-0 in the fourth on RBI-hits from Gage Bley and Shane Hale.
Starter Jared Ferenchak kept the Student Prince offense at bay through six innings but left the game after Heidelberg's first two batters reached base in the seventh. The Wilmington bullpen could not hold the lead as the Quakers surrendered five runs in the seventh, two in the eight and seven in the ninth.
Wilmington came back with three runs on RBI-hits from Kyle Short and Miller in the bottom of the ninth.
Ferenchak took the loss despite a quality start of six-plus innings and two earned runs. Alec Robinette dipped to 3-3 with the loss allowing one earned run in 1.1 innings pitched. Trevor Adkins allowed eight hits and tallied nine strikeouts in eight innings pitched to earn the victory for Heidelberg.
Individually, Shane Hale led Wilmington's offensive with a 4-for-4 game with an RBI and two runs scored. Miller finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Evan Long finished 3-for-6 with four RBIs for the Student Princes while Joe Walton and Phil Frazier both had three-hit games.
Heidelberg's offense began game two where it left off game one as the Student Princes chased Quaker starter Tyler McDaniel early in the second inning. Wilmington's next two relief pitchers, Matt Oney and Logan Brofft, combined to allow nine runs and record just two outs. The visitors led 12-0 after two innings and 17-0 after three and coasted to the series sweep.
McDaniel took the loss for Wilmington while Alex Sir Louis improved to 5-0 with the win for Heidelberg. Bryant McCarty was the Quakers' most effective pitcher in game two allowing just one hit and no runs in 2.1 innings pitched.
Wilmington had a dozen hits as a team including multi-hit games from Miller, Daniel Hayes and Kendall Vilvens. Heidelberg had 21 hits as a team in game two.
Wilmington will conclude its 2018 season with an OAC series at Ohio Northern University (ONU) on Saturday, May 5.
