Baseball Falls in OAC Opening Series at Muskingum

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Wilmington College baseball team dropped by games of the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) opening series at Muskingum University on Saturday, falling 5-4 in game one and losing 14-11 in game two on Saturday.

In game one, the Fighting Muskies plated the game's first run on an RBI-double from Marc Ibarra in the bottom of the first. The Fightin' Quakers answered with two runs in the fourth as Luke Kleindl drove in a run with a single to center field and a sacrifice fly from Kyle Short.

Neither team scored in the fifth inning, but Muskingum capitalized on a Wilmington error to score two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth. Leading 3-2, the Muskies added two more runs the following inning courtesy of two two-out RBI-hits.

Trailing by three runs after seven complete innings, Gage Bley got the Quakers back within a run with a double that scored Antonio Miller and Nick Silvis. Unfortunately, Wilmington could not score Bley as a flyout to right field ended the inning.

Similar to the eighth, Wilmington got the tying run to second base in the ninth. A strikeout that followed sealed the win for Muskingum.

Joey Hollback took the loss for the Quakers despite turning in a quality start by pitching six innings and allowing just one earned run. Evan Hinds struck out eight in 7.2 innings and got the win for the Muskies.

Wilmington finished game one with seven hits with Jake Hyatt and Kleindl turning in multi-hit games. Michael Pagano finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored to lead Muskingum offensively.

In game two, the Muskies once against scored a single run in the bottom of the first, but three hits and two sacrifice bunts from the Quakers put Wilmington on top 2-1 after two.

Muskingum tied the game with a run in the third, and after a 1-2-3 top of the fourth from Wilmington, the Muskies plated seven runs on five hits and two errors to put the game out of reach. The Quakers bat around and plate eight runs in the ninth inning, but the Muskies enters the frame leading 14-3.

Jared Ferenchak took the loss allowing eight runs (two earned) on eight hits in 3.2 innings pitched. Nolan Fernandes earned his first win of the season for Muskingum allowing two earned runs in seven innings pitched.

Wilmington had 13 hits a team including a home run from Joe Legin. Jacob Courtney, Bley Kleindl and Miller all had two hits for the Quakers. The Muskies' 2-through-6 hitters in the order all had three hits.

The Quakers (8-9, 0-2 OAC) host Oberlin College for a doubleheader tomorrow (Sunday).
