Carpenter carves up Raiders in split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Wilmington College softball team split its final Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader, and kept Mount Union from qualifying for the OAC tournament in the process.

WILMINGTON 3, MOUNT UNION 2

Wilmington scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to record the 3-2 comeback victory in the opening game.

Sophomore Becca Carpenter (South Charleston, OH/Southeastern) was stellar in the circle, allowing just two earned runs on three hits over seven innings. She didn't allow her first hit until two outs into the fourth inning, unfortunately, it was a solo homerun to give the Purple Raiders the lead.

It was a lead that didn't last long as Wilmington answered in its half of the frame.

Carpenter opened the inning with a walk, and her pinch runner, Kennedy Metz (Russia, OH/Russia), moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Whitney Edwards (Frankfort, KY/Franklin County). A wild pitch advanced Metz to third, and senior Jessie Stewart (Fredericktown, OH/Highland) singled home the tying run.

Another solo homerun gave Mount Union the lead in the seventh inning, and once again, Stewart was in the middle of the rally.

The senior laced a one-out double, and her pinch runner, Taylor Hill (New Concord, OH/John Glenn) moved to third on a two-out wild pitch. Freshman Allison Pierce (Troy, OH/Troy) reached and moved to second on a throwing error which allowed Hill to score.

Pinch runner Sawyer Hooper (Leesburg, OH/Wilmington) moved to third on a wild pitch that also walked junior Kerrie Trautman (Hartville, OH/Field). Sophomore Savannah Hooper (Leesburg, OH/Wilmington) beat out a bunt single and Sawyer Hooper brought home the winning run on the throw.

Savannah Hooper finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI and stolen base, while Stewart was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

MOUNT UNION 8, WILMINGTON 0

Mount Union scored in four of the six innings, including a pair of three-run frames, to post the 8-0 win in six innings.

Stewart was 2-for-2 in her final collegiate game, while senior Megan Warren (Grove City, OH/Grove City) finished 1-for-3.

Sophomore Beth Persicano (Knoxville, TN/Cincinnati Turpin) allowed seven runs, six earned, in 3 2/3 innings.

Wilmington wrapped up the season 11-25 overall, 3-15 in the OAC.
