@DubC_Baseball loses two to MSJ

FLORENCE, KY – The Wilmington College baseball team was swept in a non-conference doubleheader by the Mount St. Joseph Lions, 8-7 and 20-6, Sunday at UC Health Stadium.

RECORDS

  • Wilmington falls to 0-5 on the season, while Mount St. Joseph improved to 5-0.

GAME ONE

  • Wilmington allowed seven runs in the final two innings, five of which were credited to the bullpen. The WC relievers have figured into the last three decisions. Relievers Jared Ferenchak (Concord, OH/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) and Luke Matthews (Centerville, OH/Centerville) were charged with five earned runs in 1/3 innings combined.
  • Ferenchak suffers his first loss of the season.
  • Freshmen Gage Bley (Harrison, OH/Harrison) and Jake Hyatt (Madeira, OH/Madeira) combined to go 5-for-8 with five RBI and three runs scored.
  • Senior Corey Walker (Hillsboro, OH/Hillsboro) allowed three earned runs in 6 2/3 innings with five strikeouts, but didn't factor into the decision.
  • The Fightin' Quakers scored in five of nine innings to score seven runs.
  • Senior Tyler Schrock (Waynesville, OH/Waynesville) scored Wilmington's first two runs as WC took a 3-0 lead and a 5-1 advantage. He finished the day 2-for-5.
  • Mount St. Joseph used six pitchers in recording the win.

KEY MOMENTS

  • Hyatt took advantage of a misplayed foul ball in the third, and brought home WC's second run with a RBI single.
  • Hyatt was in the middle of another huge play, this time in the ninth. After Bley's two-run homerun that pulled Wilmington to within one run, Hyatt – who appeared to easily beat the throw – was called out for the first out of the final inning.

GAME TWO

  • Mount St. Joseph faced three pitchers in the first inning, and led 11-0 after one.
  • Freshman Wade Gillette (Lucasville, OH/Northwest) recorded his first career hit and drove in first career RBIs in second inning.
  • Wilmington tallied three runs in the sixth inning with Bley and senior Max Ramsey (Waynesville, OH/Waynesville) netting RBIs. The third run was scored on a wild pitch.
  • Schrock (0-1) took the loss, allowing five earned runs in 1/3 innings.
  • Wilmington used nine pitchers in the game.
  • Eight different players recorded hits with Hyatt going 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
  • Sophomore Tyler McDaniel (Trenton, OH/Edgewood) had an RBI single in the eighth inning.
 
 
 
 

WHAT'S NEXT

  • Wilmington returns action 9 a.m. Sunday to face Bluffton in a non-conference doubleheader on Player Development #4 in Ft. Myers, FL. It will be Bluffton's season opener.
