WC drops doubleheader to #9 Marietta

Box Score

MARIETTA – The Wilmington College baseball team dropped an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader Friday to #9 Marietta by identical 14-3 scores to cap the season. Wilmington finished the season 5-32 overall, 1-17 in the OAC.

The Pioneers didn't waste any time jumping on starterClay Cleaver (Pleasant Plain, OH/Little Miami) in the nightcap, scoring three runs in the first and two more in the second. Corey Walker (Hillsboro, OH/Hillsboro) relieved Cleaver one out deep into the second inning to get Wilmington out of the inning. Cleaver (0-3) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on five hits in 1 1/3 innings.

Wilmington got on the board as Cameron Schwalbach(Circleville, OH/Circleville) scored on error in the second inning. A double by Walker put runners on the corners with one out. However, back-to-back groundouts silenced the rally, although, it didn't stunt the Quakers' offensive momentum.

Jake Vinkovich (Circleville, OH/Circleville) kicked off the third with a single, and then moved to third on back-to-back wild pitches. He scored as Brandon Arehart (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) reached on an error. Arehart would eventually score to pull Wilmington to within two at 5-3. But, that would be as close as the Quakers would get.

Marietta added more distance between it and the Quakers with three runs in the fifth inning. The Pioneers added a single run in the sixth, and then threw a five-spot on the board in the seventh.

In their final collegiate game, seniors Schwalbach, Vinkovich and Hunter Justus (Circleville, OH/Logan Elm) combined for seven of Wilmington's nine hits. Schawalbach went 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and runs scored, while Vinkovich was 2-for-5 with a run scored. Justus capped his career going 2-for-4.

In the opener, Wilmington broke out to the 2-0 lead in the first inning as Arehart recorded an RBI triple and then scored on a single from Justus. The lead didn't last long as Marietta tallied multiple runs, totaling 14, in the first five innings.

Roenick Whitney (Goshen, OH/Goshen), who was the lone player with multiple hits in the first game, doubled to start the fourth. He came around to score on a Max Ramsey (Waynesville, OH/Waynesville) groundout.

Billy Foster (Xenia, OH/Xenia) fell to 1-1 as he allowed five runs (three earned) on five hits in 1 2/3 innings.
