Baseball loses two to BW

BEREA – The Wilmington College baseball team allowed 31 runs as the Quakers were swept by Baldwin-Wallace Saturday in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader. The Yellow Jackets were victorious in the first game, 15-6, and then won the nightcap, 16-4.


In the opener, the Yellow Jackets seized control of the game with a nine-run second inning, chasing starterClay Cleaver (Pleasant Plain, OH/Little Miami). Baldwin-Wallace added another run in the third inning to take an 11-0 lead before the Fightin' Quakers got on the board.

Back-to-back singles from senior Hunter Justus(Circleville, OH/Logan Elm) and sophomore Roenick Whitney (Goshen, OH/Goshen) scoring Cleaver and junior Brandon Arehart (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington), respectively. A sacrifice fly by senior Jake Vinkovich(Circleville, OH/Circleville) brought home the third run of the fourth inning.

BW responded with three in its half of the fourth, and then Wilmington added to its run total in the fifth. After Bryce Bean registered a one-out single, he raced around to score on Cleaver's double. Justus added an RBI single and Whitney an RBI groundout to complete the WC scoring.

Justus finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while Cleaver was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Cleaver (0-1) allowed seven earned runs in 1 2/3 innings to take the loss.

BW did all of their scoring in the first three innings against a pair of Wilmington pitchers in claiming the second game. The duo of Reid Wurtz (Lawrenceburg, IN/East Central), who fell to 1-2, and McKale Stakely (Pataskala, OH/Licking Heights) surrendered 16 runs (13 earned) on 13 hits over three innings.

Freshman Billy Foster (Xenia, OH/Xenia) went three scoreless innings, while Alex Finney (Crestline, OH/Buckeye Central) and Troy Wagner (Bright, IN/East Central) each contributed a scoreless inning.

Cleaver finished 2-for-5 with two RBI, while freshman Alec Hutzelman (Centerville, OH/Centerville) was 3-for-4 with a RBI and run scored, and freshman Corey Walker (Hillsboro, OH/Hillsboro) was 2-for-4 with a runs scored and RBI.
