Softball Shutout at Heidelberg

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TIFFIN, Ohio – Heidelberg University defeated the Wilmington College softball team 6-0 in both games of an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) twinbill on Friday afternoon.

In game one, the Quakers couldn't solve Student Prince pitcher Jessica Voitko, who allowed four hits with two walks on 61 pitches to earn the shutout. WC got a runner in scoring position in the first as Lindsey Carter doubled down the left field line with two outs, but Samantha Schwab grounded out to shortstop to end the inning.

That would prove to be the only runner Wilmington would get in scoring position in the game until the seventh. Double plays ended the second and fourth innings for the visitors, who attempted to mount a two-out rally in the seventh. McKenna Archey singled to center field and the inning continued on a fielding error, but Olivia Doll popped out to second base to end the game.

Avree Entler took the loss for Wilmington, allowing six earned runs on 11 hits in 4.1 innings. Hillary Huffer recorded the final five outs without surrendering a hit for the Quakers.

The top of the Student Princes lineup did most the damage, accounting for seven of the team's 11 hits. Gabbie Stallbaum, Hanna Blasinsky and Emma Dean all had two-hit contests while Ellie Tressler had one hit and drove in three runs for Heidelberg. Judea Wilson, Carter, Archey and Berry had the hits for the Quakers.

In the nightcap, neither team scored for the first two innings, but that would change in the third. After two outs, three straight RBI hits caused WC Head Coach Beth Floyd to make a pitching change as Huffer departed for Aiyana Hancock. Bame would single in another run before a foul out ended the inning with Heidelberg up 4-0.

The Quakers got runners in scoring position in each of the next two innings, but Carter was tagged out at home on a fielder's choice in the fourth and Olivia Doll grounded out with runners at first and second in the fifth. The Student Princes (14-13, 4-2 OAC) added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings to secure the sweep.

Caitlin Dems scattered six hits with three strikeouts in the shutout while Huffer dipped to 3-3 on the year allowing four unearned runs in the second. Hancock pitched the final 3.1 innings and allowed two earned runs on seven hits.

Dean, Tressler and Kaitlyn Kroll all hit doubles for Heidelberg while Rachel Berry went 2-for-3 for the Quakers.

Wilmington (10-12, 0-6 OAC) hosts Ohio Northern University on Wednesday.
