Women's Soccer Shuts Down Earlham 4-0

Box Score

RICHMOND, Indiana - The Wilmington College women's soccer team held Earlham College to just one shot in a 4-0 victory in the Quaker Bowl Rivalry on Wednesday afternoon.

The victory was Wilmington's third consecutive road win along with its sixth straight shutout victory over Earlham in the Quaker Bowl Rivalry.

"Today was another good win on the road, our third straight," Head Women's Soccer Coach Steve Spirk said. "Our defense, anchored by Haley Burge, Mellonee Hall, Courtney Ryan, Riley Allison and Leda Moyer, did not allow many shots and earned another shutout."

The Fightin' Quakers were so dominant defensively that they did not allow a shot for over 75 minutes. The Hustlin' Quakers' lone shot came off the foot of Esther Mano at the 75:09 mark, but Moyer was there to make the save and preserve the shutout.

Wilmington got on the board in the 24th minute when Alex Vestal found space in the Earlham defense. The senior got the ball to her left foot and fired a strike from 25-yards out. Earlham netminder, Madeline Chomentowski, got a hand on it, but couldn't prevent the ball from hitting the side netting for the game's first goal.

The visitors enjoyed the goal lead and halftime and doubled it in the 58th minute as Vestal ran onto a pass from Mellonee Hall and buried her second goal of the game and third of the season. Less that 90 seconds later, Abby Spirk found Hanna Greaney making the score 3-0 Wilmington with still 30 minutes to play.

The final goal of the contest came off the head of Madison Wiedeman at the 67:12 mark as a beautiful cross from Vestal was right on target.

"Alex Vestal, like many others, has been putting in extra work on her finishing," said Spirk.

Wilmington held an 11-1 edge in shots including a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks in the game.

With the victory, Wilmington improves to 5-2-0 on the season, marking its best start since beginning the 2013 campaign 5-1-1. The Quakers will return to Williams Stadium on Saturday for a 6 p.m. showdown with Albion College (Michigan).
