Box Score 2 There were no shortage of runs Tuesday, unfortunately, the Wilmington College softball team came out on the short end of a 23-15 game in the nightcap of the Fightin' Quakers Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with Ohio Northern.
The Polar Bears claimed the opener, 8-1, to complete the sweep as Wilmington falls to 9-12 overall, 0-4 in the OAC.
Trailing 19-6 in the bottom of the fifth inning, WC was three outs from falling in a run-rule shortened game. But the Fightin' Quakers refused to lie down as they tapped the scoreboard for seven runs to extend the game.
However, they couldn't keep that momentum long enough to overcome the hole they dug themselves into.
"We showed tremendous character, fight and resiliency today," said Wilmington head coach Beth Floyd. "We continued to play until the final out. Sometimes you simply run into a team that is hitting on all cylinders, and you just have to tip your hat to them."
Senior Erika Lee (Blanchester, OH/Blanchester) had a career game, going 5-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Senior Lina Larsson (Skovde, Sweden/Kavelbrogymnasiet) finished with a career-high three RBI, getting hits in both at-bats.
Five other players had multiple hits as Wilmington recorded 19 hits in the loss. Sophomore Megan Warren (Grove City, OH/Grove City) was 3-for-5 with a run scored and a RBI, while senior Kaylee Cox (Elgin, OH/Elgin) and senior Nikki Tolson (Monroe, OH/Lemon Monroe) were 2-for-3 on the day.
Senior Catlin Shilling (Waverly, OH/Waverly) was 2-for-5 with a homerun and two RBI, and senior Stacy Lunsford (Wilmington, OH/Clinton-Massie) was also 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.
Freshman Kerrie Trautman (Hartville, OH/Field) took the loss (4-6), allowing 11 runs (six earned) on 12 hits in 2 2/3 innings.
Four different players recorded hits in the opener, but Ohio Northern scored in five of the seven innings to post the victory.
Senior Danielle Monnier (Houston, OH/Houston) allowed eight runs (seven earned) to take the loss (5-6). She recorded seven strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Wilmington returns to the diamond 3 p.m. Wednesday, facing John Carroll in an OAC doubleheader in University Heights, OH.
