Softball falls in walkoff fashion

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FT. MYERS, FL – A two-out, two-run walkoff single sent Wilmington to the 2-1 loss to Kenyon Monday in second of two games at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. A four-run sixth inning was the culprit as WC fell to St. John Fisher in the opener.

"Our pitchers put us in position to win two ballgames, and we just need to score runs and come up with timely hits," said Wilmington head coach Beth Floyd. "We scattered eight hits, we just need to come up with the big hit with people in scoring position," said Floyd. "It's very frustrating to leave so many people on base."

Wilmington was just 4-of-16 with runners in scoring position and left 11 runners on base.

A one-out hit batter started the Ladies rally in the seventh, and then a perfectly placed bunt single had Kenyon knocking on the door. A bobbled grounder, while allowing WC to gain an out, put runners on second and third with two outs. The winning runs came home on a blooper just beyond the reach of Wilmington second baseman Allie Noggle (Ashville, OH/Teays Valley).

Senior Danielle Monnier (Houston, OH/Houston) took the loss to fall to 1-1 on the season, allowing two runs on four hits in 6 2/3 innings with nine strikeouts. She wiggled out of bases loaded danger in the sixth inning to keep the game scoreless.

Offensively, senior Stacy Lunsford (Wilmington, OH/Clinton Massie) recorded three of Wilmington's nine hits and Noggle had the lone WC RBI with single in the fourth. The Fightin' Quakers could have put more distance between them in the fourth inning, but didn't push anymore runs across after having runners on second and third with no outs.

Three different players – Lunsford, senior Kaylee Cox (Elgin, OH/Elgin) and freshman Sydney Kelly (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore) – accounted for six of WC's seven hits in the loss to St. John Fisher.

Freshman Kerrie Trautman (Hartville, OH/Field) pitched well until surrendering five of her eight allowed hits in the sixth inning. She falls to 0-2 after allowing four runs (two earned) in 5 2/3 innings with eight hits and four strikeouts.

Wilmington returns to the diamond 9 a.m. to face regional foe Bluffton, and then at 11 a.m. to face Franklin.
