Monnier brilliant in circle

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEW CONCORD – The Wilmington College softball team was eliminated from Ohio Athletic Conference playoff contention Tuesday as the Lady Quakers were swept by Muskingum in an OAC doubleheader. Wilmington lost the opener, 1-0, and was defeated in the nightcap, 6-3, at Donna Newberry Field.

Despite allowing just one hit in the opener, junior Danielle Monnier (Houston, OH/Houston) took the loss. She falls to 12-5 on the season, yielding an unearned run in six innings of work.

Muskingum used two WC errors in the fourth inning to score the game's lone run.

Senior Brooke Byrne (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) and junior Erika Lee (Blanchester, OH/Blanchester) each recorded hits in the opener.

The Muskies went to work early in the second game scoring two runs in the first and second innings to chase starter Jess Clutter (Englewood, OH/Northmont) from the circle. Clutter (6-9) allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits in 1 1/3 innings.

Wilmington had a fantastic opportunity to cut into their deficit in the third inning. Three consecutive singles by Allie Noggle (Ashville, OH/Teays Valley), Stacy Lunsford (Wilmington, OH/Clinton-Massie) and Megan Warren (Grove City, OH/Grove City) left the Lady Quakers with bases loaded and just one out. However, Byrne and Catlin Shilling (Waverly, OH/Waverly) popped up and WC couldn't manage a run.

It wouldn't be the last time WC had a chance to dent the plate, and this time they took advantage. Shilling walked to lead off the sixth and moved to second on a single by Lee. In just her second at-bat of the season, Monnier laced a double that scored Shilling and left runners on second and third. A wild pitch scored the second run of the inning and Kelsey Becker (Clarksville, IN/Clarksville) single home another run, pulling Wilmington to within one. Becker finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI.

However, they couldn't get the tying run home, and Muskingum tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Wilmington (20-14 overall, 5-11 OAC) wraps up its season 1 p.m. Saturday against Mount Union.
