Records, Quakers fall in doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Two all-time school records went by the wayside Saturday, but it was only consolation prizes as the Wilmington College softball team dropped a pivotal Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader to Capital, 10-6 in nine innings and 9-3 in the nightcap.

Junior Danielle Monnier (Houston, OH/Houston) recorded four strikeouts to become the school's leader in the category, while senior Brooke Byrne (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) established a new record for runs scored crossing the plate for the 84th time in her career.

The Lady Quakers also recognized the accomplishments of three seniors, Bryne, catcher Kelsey Becker (Clarksville, IN/Clarksville) and athletic trainer Taylor Duncan, prior the game.

Thanks to an error to kick off the faithful ninth inning, Capital rattled off seven unearned runs – including a two-out grand slam – to pretty much seal the opener. Wilmington answered with three runs in its half of the ninth, but it wasn't enough.

The Crusaders took the early lead by scoring single runs in each of the first three innings, and it looked as it would be enough until the Wilmington bats finally came awake in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Catlin Shilling (Waverly, OH/Waverly), the school's all-time homerun leader, started the rally with a solo shot to centerfield.

One out later, junior Olivia Hutchison (Mason, OH/Mason) connected on her second homer of the season, also to centerfield. Then, WC played a little small ball for the third run. Freshman Megan Rachford (Germantown, OH/Valley View) singled, and pinchrunner Hillary Daria-White (Felicity, OH/Felicity Franklin) moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Daria-White raced home with the tying run on a two-out single by freshman Megan Warren (Grove City, OH/Grove City).

Monnier (11-4) allowed 10 runs (three earned) on 12 hits over nine innings to suffer the loss.

Four different players – Hutchison, junior Stacy Lunsford (Wilmington, OH/Clinton-Massie), junior Erika Lee (Blanchester, OH/Blanchester) and sophomore Allie Noggle (Ashville, OH/Teays Valley – recorded two hits as Wilmington pounded out 13 hits on the game.

Capital scored eight unanswered runs to complete the two-game sweep. The Crusaders scored first in the top of the third inning. A two-out error in the bottom half of the frame before CU went on its scoring binge.

Wilmington added two unearned runs in the seventh inning to get to the final score.

Sophomore Jess Clutter (Englewood, OH/Northmont) allowed nine runs (five earned) on 11 hits in seven innings to take the loss. Warren was 2-for-2 with a double in the loss.

The Lady Quakers (19-11 overall, 5-9 OAC) returns to action tomorrow in non-conference action to face Wittenberg.
