Quakers sweep Heidelberg

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Kaylee Cox's three-run pinch-hit home run in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Wilmington College to a 9-7 win over Heidelberg University and complete a sweep of the Berg at the WC Softball Complex Sunday afternoon.

Wilmington, which won the opener by a 4-3 count, is now 2-4 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, 13-9 overall. Heidelberg falls to 2-4 in the conference, 18-6 for the season.

"Our kids played very hard, start to finish, in both games today," Wilmington head coach Beth Floyd said. "They were really focused and did a lot of little things right. They just kept battling and worked hard all day. You could see that they were being competitive and solid throughout."

Cox (Prospect/Elgin) hit the game-winning bomb to cap a six-run inning that was Wilmington's response to Heidelberg hanging six on the board in the top of the sixth.

"We had one bad inning today, but the kids bounced right back," Floyd said.

Down, 7-3, Shauna Ward (West Carrollton) led off the seventh with a pinch-hit single. After Heidelberg recorded an out, Wilmington got consecutive hits from Holly Sheets (Richwood/North Union), Christine Tiell (Tiffin/Columbian) and Kelsey Becker (Clarksville, Ind.). Becker's double cut the deficit to 7-6.

A groundout to the pitcher left the Quakers with two outs and runners on second and third.

Enter Cox, who ripped a laser shot over the fence in left field to give Wilmington the 9-7 win.

"We had two huge pinch-hits in the seventh," Floyd said. "Shauna Ward has been hitting the ball outstanding in practice, and she needed an opportunity to get an at-bat. She came through huge for us. Kaylee was a little nervous, but she settled down after she saw a pitch or two. She got all of it. That ball got out of the ballpark in a hurry."

Becker and Catlin Shilling (Waverly) led Wilmington's 11-hit attack with two hits and two RBIs apiece.

Shilling pitched 1.2 innings in relief of Danielle Monnier (Houston) to pick up the win and move to 2-0 on the season.

In the opener, Kylie Ford (South Vienna/Northeastern) went the distance to pick up her seventh win against five losses. The junior worked her way out of jams on a regular basis to leave 12 Heidelberg runners on base.

"Kylie pitched probably her best game of the year against a very good Heidelberg team," Floyd said. "She kept them off balance and hit her spots. Whenever she needed to make a big pitch, she did it."

Sheets and Shilling singled in runs as Wilmington took a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

After Heidelberg cut the deficit in half in the top of the third, Wilmington responded with an unearned run in the bottom of the inning on a Tiell base hit.

Ford helped her own cause with an RBI single that gave Wilmington a 4-1 lead after five innings.

Heidelberg got a run in the sixth, but Ford got out of a bases-loaded jam to keep Wilmington up, 4-2.

The Berg pulled within a run in the top of the seventh, but Ford stranded the would-be tying run by inducing Heidelberg into back-to-back groundouts to end the game.

Tiell, Becker and Ford had two hits each in the opener. For the day, Becker was 4-for-6 with three doubles, two RBI and three runs scored.

"Kelsey is our leader on the field, and she really showed that today," Floyd said. "She had a solid performance behind the plate and really hit the ball. She hit with power to all fields because she was hitting the ball where it was pitched."
