Box Score 2 MARIETTA — Big innings were a one-sided story as Wilmington College dropped both ends of an Ohio Athletic Conference softball doubleheader to Marietta Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers took game one, 9-3, and finished the sweep with a 5-2 victory over the Quakers.
Wilmington is now 0-2 in the OAC, 9-5 overall. Marietta improves to 2-0 in the conference, 10-5 for the season.
"We just left way too many people on base," Wilmington head coach Beth Floyd said. "We had hits, but we couldn't string hits together, and we didn't put the bat on the ball when the bases were loaded."
Marietta scored four fourth-inning runs — three of which were unearned — to break open game one.
Wilmington cut the deficit to 6-3 when Catlin Shilling (Waverly) and Christine Tiell (Tiffin/Columbian) drove in runs in the fifth.
The Pioneers, though, answered with a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to seal the win.
The Quakers took a 2-0 lead in game two when Shilling chased home a pair of runs with a double in the third inning. The freshman designated player finished the day with four RBI to take over the team lead with nine.
"Catlin has been huge for us all year. She has done a great job of coming up with big hits and driving in runs. She did the same thing today," Floyd said.
The lead did not last long. Marietta tied the score with two runs in the bottom of the third and put a three-spot on the board in the fifth. The Quakers had base runners, but couldn't dent the plate again.
Danielle Monnier (Houston) pitched well in a losing effort.
"Danielle pitched a very good game. They are a fast team. Five of their 10 hits were bunts," Floyd said. "Danielle gave up one hard hit all day."
Wilmington will host Wittenberg in a non-conference doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. March 31.
"We just have to keep our heads up and continue playing hard," Floyd said. "We have a lot of season left."
