(WILMINGTON, Ohio) - The Wilmington College women's soccer team will host the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Tournament Championship game against the No. 5 seed Ohio Northern University Polar Bears at Williams Stadium on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 P.M.
Wilmington last hosted the conference championship in 2003, a game which they won 1-0 over Otterbein University for their last OAC Tournament championship and last NCAA Tournament appearance.
Championship Preview
Wilmington's road to the championship began at home against Baldwin Wallace University. The Quakers handled business in the OAC Quarterfinals, taking down the Yellow Jackets 3-1 with three different goal scorers.
The Quakers traveled to Capital University for their next test in the OAC Semifinals. Wilmington prevailed in double overtime 3-2 once again with three different goal scorers.
Wilmington returns home to Williams Stadium having outscored their opponents 6-3 during the tournament, scoring three goals in each game. With their quarterfinals win, the Quakers home record improved to 8-1-1.
No. 5 seed Ohio Northern started their run to the championship at the University of Mount Union, taking down the Purple Raiders in a thriller penalty shootout in the quarterfinals. Maddie Montgomery scored the only goal in regulation for the Polar Bears. Ohio Northern made all five of their penalty kicks in the shootout.
The Polar Bears then traveled to take on the No. 1 seed Otterbein University Cardinals. In the 83rd minute, Sarah Beachy converted a penalty kick to defeat Otterbein 1-0.
Ayva Moore and Maddie Montgomery lead the Polar Bears with three goals each. Karsten Bucci scored two goals. Junior defender Caroline Hennegan received Second Team All-OAC honors. Goalkeeper Morgan Moeller has made 60 saves, allowing 20 goals with a save percentage of 0.750 in 19 games. Ohio Northern came into the season tabbed as the favorite to win the OAC, receiving seven of the nine first place votes and 63 total.
Regular Season Recap
Wilmington and Ohio Northern met in the regular season on October 29th in a torrential downpour with extreme winds where the Quakers lost 1-0. The Polar Bears scored in the 15th minute on a rebound after a save by
Emma Storck. The Quakers were unable to settle into a rhythm, ending the first half with no shots on target.
Ohio Northern's defense and midfield remained in control throughout the second half.
Alex Wilson had Wilmington's best opportunity late with a one-on-one against the keeper, but her attempt was saved.
The Quakers only had seven shots with two on target in that match.
Emma Storck made four saves.
Semifinals Recap
The Quakers defeated Capital University 3-2 in double overtime in a raucous away environment on Thursday night.
Alex Wilson's header put Wilmington ahead 1-0 early on a great ball played in by
Jordan Snyder. The Comets tied the match in the 23rd minute, and the first half ended 1-1.
Capital's attack was aggressive out of the break and took a 2-1 lead in the 77th minute. With under two minutes remaining,
MJ Little scored from distance to lock the teams up at 2-2.
Wilmington was under pressure in the first overtime, but
Emma Storck made two great saves to keep the score 2-2. In the 104th minute,
Olivia Roye recovered a loose ball from a Quakers corner kick and scored to give Wilmington the 3-2 double overtime victory.
