Men's Soccer Erupts for Seven Goals in Win at Muskingum

NEW CONCORD, Ohio - The Wilmington College men's soccer team erupted for seven goals in a 7-1 decisive victory at Muskingum University in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) action on Wednesday evening.

The Fightin' Quakers started out hot with a fourth-minute goal from Ludwig Lance assisted by Niklas Martensson. Thompson Birch then scored off of a corner kick by Daniel Kappelin to bring the Quakers lead to 2-0 in the 12th minute. Ian Molfenter followed up with a goal in the 15th minute assisted by David Bogaczewicz. Muskingum's lone goal came off of its only shot on goal of the night by Chase Michael Hillard assisted by Don Ingold in the 18th minute. Wilmington would round out the first half with goals Martensson and Treshaun Pate in the 38th and 39th minutes respectively to give the Quakers a 5-1 lead at the half.

The Quakers started off the second half strong as well thanks to a 52nd-minute goal by Leon Tank, assisted by Martensson. The final goal of the night came from Bruce Anthony in the 89th minute to put the Quakers up 7-1.

Wilmington outshot the Muskies 17-5 on their way to an OAC win. Muskingum would have two second half red cards forcing them to finish the game with only nine players on the pitch. Felix Maurer earned the victory allowing one goal while Ethan Butcher closed out the final 16:01 in net. Josh Routte took the loss for Muskingum allowing five goals on six shots.

Wednesday night's win brings the Quakers to 6-4-0 on the season and 1-1-0 in OAC competition as well as improving their record against Muskingum to 24-3-1 since the 1986 season.

"Our guys were ready to play from the first whistle," Head Men's Soccer Coach Alex Van der Sluijs said. "We we keep our game consistent and stay focused for 90 minutes, we can play with anyone."

Wilmington will continue OAC play on Saturday at home against the University of Mount Union. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
