Pair of second-half goals undo @DubC_MSoccer

Box Score

A pair of second-half goals provided the margin of defeat as the Wilmington College men's soccer team fell to Capital, 2-0, in Ohio Athletic Conference action Tuesday on Townsend Field in Williams Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Wilmington had a couple of stellar chances, once in each half, but couldn't find the back of the net. Freshman Wille Winald (Asa, Sweden/Elof Lindalv) pulled one wide from five yards out, and junior Daniel Kappelin (Pixbo, Sweden/IHGR) hit the crossbar on a free kick in the second half.
  • Capital's ability to get its throw-ins into the box posed problems for the WC defense, and led to the Crusaders finishing with a 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.
  • The Crusaders finished with 20 of the 31 shots.
  • Junior Benny Spirk (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) recorded Wilmington's lone shot on goal.
  • Sophomore Roman Kirschner (Opava, Czech Republic/Mendel's Grammar School) and Kappelin led the team with two shots each.
  • Capital tallied its first goal in the 81st minute, and then took advantage of a WC miscue to gain an insurance goal with less than a minute remaining.
  • Wilmington played without its starting goalkeeper Chris Bourque (Batavia, OH/Batavia). Freshman Jacob Franke (Tipp City, OH/Tippecanoe) acquitted himself well in his first start, making five saves on seven shots.

COACHES CORNER

"We had our chances," said Wilmington head coach Bud Lewis. "(Capital) is dangerous because they have a long throw-in, and that is how they got their corner kicks. They didn't outplay us all over the field. I liked our chances, but they just had more chances in the box because they had those throw-ins. It made a big play distinction in the game. Make no mistake, (Capital) is a good team, but we let this one get away. A tie would have been a fair outing."

WHAT'S NEXT

Wilmington (6-5-1 overall, 0-2 OAC) travels to play Baldwin Wallace 7:30 p.m. Friday in OAC action.
