Men's soccer falls to Wittenberg

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD – Four inches. Four inches one way, and the Wilmington College men's soccer team would be headed to overtime.

However, junior Nick Toney's (Morrow, OH/Little Miami) last second shot slid past the post and the Fightin' Quakers fell to Wittenberg, 2-1, in non-conference action at Edwards-Mauer Field. The Tigers scored two goals in the last 28 minutes to secure the victory.

"It's a very disappointing loss," said Wilmington head coach Bud Lewis. "Wittenberg worked hard and we lost our composure at times. We struggled with the pressure Wittenberg put on us. We just struggled in the box. There were several balls across the goal line and we failed to put them in. When you don't finish your chances, you typically play a price."

Wilmington falls to 1-1 on the season, while the Tigers improve to 1-1. The Fightin' Quakers travels to Covenant College Soccer Classic, playing host Covenant 7 p.m. Friday. They will play Maryville (TN) 5 p.m. Saturday.

Senior Daniel Wicks (Reading, OH/Reading) played the entire 90 minutes in goal, made one save in allowing both goals. Unfortunately, the Tigers scored on both of their second-half shots.

Senior Taylor Estes (Reading, OH/Reading) gave Wilmington the early lead with an unassisted goal from 35 yards out in the 23rd minute. WC maintained its lead, but couldn't lengthen its advantage despite unleashing 11 second-half shots.

Senior Evan Schlagetter (Sidney, OH/Sidney) led the team with four shots.
