Toney leads WC to first win

Box Score

Sophomore transfer Nick Toney scored his first two goals in a Wilmington uniform as the Quakers won their first game of the season, beating Wittenberg 4-1 Saturday in the 2013 Kiwanis Classic at Charlie Gilhart Field.

"We needed a good result tonight," said head coach Bud Lewis. "We always have a battle with Wittenberg, and it's a great win anytime we can beat them."

Toney's first goal, which game in the 53rd minute, broke a 1-1 tie and seemed to spark the Wilmington attack. He added the game's final tally beating the goalkeeper following a dandy feed from junior Drew Fields (Mariemont, OH/Mariemont).

"That first goal was all him," said Lewis. "He beat several players and finally executed a shot on goal. It was a tremendous goal.

"We talked a lot about finishing games," he continued. "He scored some late goals to give us a cushion. Wittenberg put a lot of pressure, and for the most part, we responded."

Junior Evan Schlagetter got Wilmington on the board first, scoring in the 13th minute, but Wiitenberg answered in the 27th minute.

Senior Henrik Hornnaess  finished with one goal and an assist in the winning effort. Not only getting are the Quakers getting Hornaess healthy, the insertion of junior Taylor Estes into the starting lineup gave WC a huge boost.

"He was a difference for us," said Lewis. "He lifted us defensively. His smarts and creativity is a big difference for us, and provided a big boost."

Lewis added that the play of junior Alex Ruckman was critical following the injury of freshman Marcus Tornberg. Additional junior Martin Holmquist really anchored the WC defense and was a key cog during the weekend tournament. He also added an assist on the day.

Wilmington (1-3) travels to Transylvania 5 p.m. Tuesday in non-conference action.
