WC goes deep for sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CRESTVIEW HILLS, KY – Junior Catlin Shilling hit two of Wilmington's four homeruns as the Lady Quakers swept Thomas More Friday in a non-conference doubleheader, 6-4 and 13-3, at the Thomas More softball complex.

Both of Shilling's (Waverly, OH/Waverly) long balls came during Wilmington's eight-run fourth inning of WC's run-rule victory in the nightcap. All of the Lady Quakers runs in the fourth inning came with two outs. The Lady Quakers secured the run-rule with a five-run fifth keyed by junior Brooke Byrne's (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) grand slam.

In the sweep, Wilmington hit .400 (8-for-20) with two outs and .385 (10-of-26) with runners in scoring position.

"We hit the ball really well today, and it was a good win," said head coach Beth Floyd.

Byrne finished 2-for-3 with five RBI and two runs scored, while Shilling was 2-for-4 with four RBI. Junior Stacy Lunsford (Wilmington, OH/Clinton-Massie) and freshman Megan Rachford (Germantown, OH/Valley View) both had two hits in the nightcap.

Shilling, in her second career start and first of the season, allowed three runs on seven hits to pick up the victory.
Junior Olivia Hutchison connected on two-out, three-run pinch-hit home run lifting Wilmington to the 6-4 win in the opener.

Shilling and junior Erika Lee (Blanchester, OH/Blanchester) started the rally with back-to-back two-out singles, bringing Hutchison (Mason, OH/Mason) to the plate. It was the first career homerun for Hutchison. She also started the scoring with a double off the wall, and advanced to score the game's opening run. Freshman Hilary Daria-White (Felicity, OH/Felicity Franklin) recorded her first career-high hit in the fourth inning and scored on a two-out single by senior Byrne.

Thomas More strung together five straight two-out hits and with the aid of a two-out error scored four runs to take a 4-2 lead. Wilmington chipped away at the lead with a single run in the sixth before the three-run outburst in the seventh.

Sophomore Jess Clutter (Edgewood, OH/Northmont) allowed four runs (three earned) in seven innings to improve to 4-2 on the season.

Wilmington (10-2) travels to Hanover, IN to face the Panthers in non-conference action.
