Football falls to unbeaten JCU

Box Score

The Wilmington College football team fell to 0-7 on the season, falling to unbeaten John Carroll Saturday in Ohio Athletic Conference action, 63-3.

"John Carroll is a very good football team," said head coach Stacey Hairston. "They are very strong offensively, defensively and on special teams. They don't have a weakness. They are one of the best teams in the nation. Even if we would have played perfect, it would have been difficult to beat them. We just don't have the depth. We don't want to make excuses, we expect our guys to make plays."

Wilmington, who was without five defensive starters, surrendered 438 yards passing and 586 yards of total offense.

The Fightin' Quakers were able to get on the board midway through the fourth quarter on a 25-yard field goal by freshmen Grant Brown (Stoutsville, OH/Stoutsville). The field goal capped a nine-play, 63-yard drive led by back-up quarterback Austin Jarbo (Gratis, OH/Preble Shawnee). He finished 2-of-9 for 34 yards and one interception.

Jarbo completed a 21-yard pass to junior Matt Stooksbury (Centerburg, OH/Highland) on third down, and then picked up another first down on an 11-yard scramble. A 14-yard completion to freshman Tyler Tarnowski (Brecksville, OH/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) had WC knocking on the door at the one-yard line. However, Wilmington could punch it in and settled for the three points.

"Anytime you get into scoring range, you have to come away with points," said Hairston. "We were glad to get the three points. We had a chance earlier, but came away with no points. It's been the same all season long. We will have to evaluate whether it is strictly personnel or a scheme thing."

Senior quarterback Brandon Arehart (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) finished the game 9-of-21 for 109 yards and two interceptions. Sophomore Jeremy Duncan (Cincinnati, OH/Archbishop Moeller) hauled in four passes for 59 yards, while Stooksbury finished with four receptions for 46 yards.

Freshman Zak Kruer (Miamisburg, OH/Miamisburg) finished with 15 rushes for 56 yards.

Defensively, sophomore linebacker Tarrell Starckey (Richmond, VA/Highland Springs) recorded 12 tackles, a half for loss and a pass break-up. Freshman Trent Waters (Bowling Green, OH/Bowling Green) added eight tackles for the Quakers.

Wilmington will have its final home game of the season, hosting Ohio Northern 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
