Lineup, attitude adjustment lead WC

Box Score

GRANVILLE, OH - Following the loss to Kenyon on September 20th, the Wilmington men's soccer team and coaching staff had a heart to heart conversation. The basics were holding each other accountable and playing to your ability.

Combine the increased intensity level with the moving of junior Dan Wicks (Cincinnati, OH/Reading) to the midfield, and it seems for at least the last couple of games that the Quakers have started to but things together.

Freshman Cody Sabins (Maryville, OH/Maryville) scored the game-winning goal in the 74th minute to lift Wilmington to the 2-1 victory over Denison Tuesday in non-conference action. It marked the final game out of Ohio Athletic Conference action for the Quakers as they host Muskingum 7 p.m. Saturday at Charlie Gilhart Field.

"We have made a few adjustments that has played dividends," said WC head coach Bud Lewis. "Moving Dan Wicks to the midfield has given us a tremendous boost. His ball control and vision have benefited us. His work single-handedly set up our second goal."

The goal scored by Sabins was above preserverance as his initial attempt was batted down by the goalkeeper, but refusing to be denied he pounded the rebound to the back of the net.

Wilmington had two or three good chances late in the game to gain an insurance goal, but the play in the back by junior Antonio Trujillo (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton), sophomore Joey Brown (Dayton, OH/Bethel), sophomore Martin Holmquist (Karlstad, Sweden/Alvkulle Gymnasiet) and freshman Jesse Buhrman (Westlake, OH/Westlake) was enough to secure the victory.

It didn't take long for WC to take the lead as sophomore Erik Hammar (Stockholm, Sweden/Ava Gymnasium) took a feed from freshman Marcus Torbjornsson (Langas, Sweden) and hit a laser that got past the Denison goalkeeper.

However, the lead was short lived as a miscommunication in the defensive backfield enabled a Big Red forward to run unmarked through the zone and net the equalizer.
