Football shutout for second straight game

Box Score

WILMINGTON, OH – The Wilmington College football team was shutout for the second straight game as the Fightin' Quakers fell to top-ranked Mount Union Saturday, 66-0, at Williams Stadium in Ohio Athletic Conference action.

"It all starts up front," said interim head coach Jay Niswonger. "Everything starts up front. We saw some good things on defense.

"We did a couple of different things (offensively) that hopefully, down the road, we can use."

The Purple Raiders scored on 11 of their 13 possessions, two of those failed scoring attempts came at the end of the first and second halves, respectively. Although Mount Union was able to find the end zone, the WC defense forced the Purple Raiders to put some drives together.

Sophomore Joe Joe Knecht (Lancaster, OH/Lancaster) was one of four Quakers with double-figure tackles, leading the team with 15 tackles. The second-leading tackler in the OAC, sophomore Gunner Calhoun (Wilmington, OH/Clinton-Massie), added 14 tackles, two of which were for loss. As a team, Wilmington had eight tackles for loss.

Junior Matt McFadden (Sabina, OH/East Clinton) and senior Ben Dunahue (Kenton, OH/Kenton) recorded 11 and 10 tackles, respectively.

All week, the Wilmington coaching staff talked about wanting to know how the team would respond to the task of playing the nation's top ranked team.

"They responded to the challenge," Niswonger commented. "(The defense was) able to stop them a couple times and get the ball back to (the offense)."

Senior March Jones (Pensacola, FL/Jefferson Davis, AL), junior Malcolm Turner (Gahanna, OH/Gahanna Lincoln) and juniorAntonio Turner (Gahanna, OH/Gahanna Lincoln) all had two catches for 33, 30 and 26 yards, respectively.

Sophomore Ryan Smith (Loveland, OH/Loveland) and senior Tyrell Richardson (Columbus, OH/Centennial) both had 10 yards rushing.

Wilmington (0-5 overall, 0-4 OAC) travels to No. 24 Baldwin-Wallace 2 p.m. Saturday.
