Football forces five turnovers in loss

Box Score

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OH – The Wilmington College football team forced five turnovers, but only turned one into a score in falling to John Carroll Saturday, 34-7, at Don Shula Stadium.

It was the final takeaway, an interception by senior Ben Dunahue (Kenton, OH/Kenton) at the eight yardline was returned 77 yards to the John Carroll 15. One play later, junior quarterback Brandon Arehart (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) ran the football to paydirt.

The five takeaways – three forced fumbles and two interceptions – were the most forced by the Quakers this season.

Wilmington had a chance to trim their deficit to four midway through the second quarter, but a 38-yard field goal was missed, and JCU immediately responded. The Blue Streaks proceeded to march 79 yards on 10 plays for the 13-0 lead. It started a stretch in which the home team scored on four straight possessions, spanning the end of the second quarter and beginning of the third.

After John Carroll score on their first possession of the second half, the Wilmington defense kept them off the board.

Junior safety Devon Burton (Waynesville, OH/Waynesville) led the Quakers with 13 tackles and an interception, while freshman linebacker Nick Williams (Cleveland, OH/Fairview) added 12 tackles and a fumble recovery.

Arehart finished the game 14-of-30 for 133 yards and two interceptions. Freshman Jeremy Duncan (Cincinnati, OH/ Archbishop Moeller) hauled in a career-high six receptions and tied a career-high with 72 receiving yards.

Wilmington (1-7 overall, 1-6 OAC) will play its final road game of the season, traveling to Ohio Northern Saturday.
