(MARYVILLE, Tenn.) – The Wilmington Quakers downed the Piedmont Lions 6-2 in their first of two matches at the Maryville College Fall Classic at the MC Soccer Complex on Saturday evening.
The Quakers never trailed, taking their first lead in the 10th minute on a penalty kick from Eli Eyrich. Despite an equalizer from Piedmont in the 13th minute, William Jansson scored back-to-back goals in the 17th and 21st minutes on an assist from Aidan Barnishin and a penalty kick, respectively, to give Wilmington a 3-1 advantage. The Green and White carried the two-goal lead into halftime.
Coming out of halftime, Wilmington built on its two unanswered goals with three more to put the match out of reach. On his third goal contribution of the match, Jansson found Eyrich in the 59th minute to extend the lead to 4-1. Noah Lee and Logan Kent then scored unassisted goals in the 75th and 79th minutes, respectively, to give the Quakers a commanding 6-1 advantage.
Although the Lions scored in the 90th minute, the Quakers cruised to a 6-2 victory to improve to 2-0 on the season.
