(WILMINGTON, Ohio) – Logan McQuillin eclipsed 1,000 career digs while helping the Wilmington Quakers sweep the Geneva Golden Tornadoes on Friday night at Raizk Arena in Hermann Court to kick off Homecoming weekend.
Geneva opened the match by scoring seven of the first 11 points. A kill by Magee Fain and a service ace from Paige Shouse helped Wilmington counter with a 4-0 run. The set stayed tight until Wilmington, led by an ace from Aubrey Clark and a kill by Shouse, built a five-point advantage with a 6-1 run. Although the visiting Golden Tornadoes narrowed the deficit to three, the Green and White pulled away to win the opening set, 25-18, closing the frame on back-to-back kills from Emelia Mohler.
The Golden Tornadoes and Quakers were once again deadlocked to begin the second frame. Tied at 14-14, Geneva grabbed the momentum and put itself in position to even the match with a 9-5 run.
Trailing 23-19, Mackenzie Simpson thundered a kill down the line to spark Wilmington's comeback effort. Despite a timeout from Geneva, the Quakers rallied to score the final six points of the frame, stealing the second set, 25-23.
The Quakers never trailed in the third set en route to a 25-16 victory. Beginning with kills from Mohler and Simpson, Wilmington generated an 8-3 advantage. The Quakers, spurred on by a trio of kills from Mohler, increased their lead to as many as 11.
Although Geneva answered with a 7-0 run, the Green and White staved off the comeback effort. A service ace from Mia Spence followed by a kill from Clark secured Wilmington's eighth victory of the season.
McQuillin entered the match needing just four digs to reach 1,000 for her career. Prior to the first timeout of the opening set, the senior libero from Defiance, Ohio, recorded the four digs she needed to reach the milestone.
During the timeout, McQuillin was recognized for her achievement and received an ovation from those in attendance.
With the milestone, McQuillin became the fifth Quaker to record 1,000 career digs, joining Katie Roush, Blake O'Brien, Krysti George and Karley Schlensker. McQuillin, who now has 1,017 career digs, sits 125 away from breaking Wilmington's all-time career record.
Notables
- In addition to becoming the fifth Quaker to record 1,000 career digs, Logan McQuillin posted season and team highs with 21 digs. Her total is tied for the second-most digs recorded by an OAC player in a three-set match this season.
- Magee Fain posted a team-high 10 kills. Emelia Mohler and Paige Shouse added eight and seven, respectively.
- Emma Specht and Jana Metz paced Wilmington with 16 assists apiece. Specht finished two digs shy of a double-double with eight.
- Brinlee Preston amassed a team-high three total blocks.
- With an 8-2 mark through 10 matches, the Quakers have already doubled their win total from last season.
