Baseball Splits Thrilling Doubleheader vs. Ohio Northern at Home

(WILMINGTON, Ohio)The Wilmington College baseball team split their doubleheader with the visiting Ohio Northern University Polar Bears Wednesday afternoon at Tewksbury-Delaney Field, taking game one 9-6 before dropping game two 9-8. 

Game 1 – Wilmington Defeats Ohio Northern, 9-6
The Quakers used a two out Kyle Jennings double into center field to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning to give them the momentum in the contest. Ohio Northern fought back and took a 5-2 advantage with three runs in the second and two runs in the third.

Wilmington couldn't get anything going until the sixth inning. It started with a Brody Julian line drive over the right field fence to cut the deficit to 5-3. Jennings hit a two out single into right center field later in the inning before Max Gildea smoked a homerun onto the sidewalk in left field for a 7-5 Quakers lead. 

Two more runs followed for Wilmington in the seventh as they held tough on the mound and won the game, 9-6.

Game 1 Notables
  • Brody Julian and Kyle Jennings both had three hits while Braden Chambers added two. 
  • Jennings drove in four runs and made some great plays defensively at shortstop.
  • Julian scored three runs in the game.
  • Max Gildea drove in three runs on his fourth homerun of the season.
  • Quakers pitching combined for seven strikeouts and allowed just one run after the third inning.
  • Nathan Powers earned his first win of the season.
  • Bobby Fleming picked up his first save in a Quakers uniform.

Game 2 – Ohio Norther Defeats Wilmington, 9-8

The Quakers jumped ahead 2-0 again in game two on a Eli Hollingsworth bases loaded walk and J.C. Calhoun fielder's choice. The Polar Bears went ahead 5-2 in the top of the fifth.

A Dominic Depa moonshot into right field put the Quakers down 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth. Another two out hit by Kyle Jennings tied the game in the bottom of the sixth at 5-5. J.C Calhoun gave Wilmington the lead in the bottom of the seventh on a single to drive in Brody Julian

Unfortunately for the Quakers, the Polar Bears scored a pair of runs in the ninth and came away with the 9-8 win.

Game 2 Notables
  • Wilmington had a season high 13 hits in the game.
  • Avery Battle had three hits while J.C Calhoun, Bobby Fleming, and Dominic Depa all had two.
  • Depa drove in three runs and Calhoun had two RBI.
  • The Quakers were hit by a pitch four times and drew seven walks.
  • Quakers pitching combined for six strikeouts, with Corey Moore, Dawson Blunt, and Liam Denehy all having scoreless outings.
