Quakers Score 26 Total Runs to Sweep Ohio Wesleyan

(DELAWARE, Ohio) - Wilmington swept Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday night, overpowering the Battling Bishops with their offense.  

Game 1 – 12-0 (5 inn.) Win Over Ohio Wesleyan 

After a scoreless first, Wilmington took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 2nd. Audrey Gildea led off with a walk and Ashley Jo Hardesty walked. Maddie Starnes singled to load the bases as Jobey Hattan grounded out to bring in Gildea. 

The Quakers jumped ahead to a 6-0 lead in the top of the 3rd. Jocelyn Franz was hit by a pitch to lead off, followed by a single from Alasandra Spears. Alaina Eldridge singled home Franz. Starnes then singled in Eldridge. A walk by Grace Cline brought in a run, and Hattan hit into an error that brought home two more runs. 

Through three innings, Gildea held the Battling Bishops to no hits with two strikeouts. After three walks to load the bases, an error and a wild pitch brought home Wilmington's eighth run. A walk by Hardesty scored the ninth run. The Quakers' offensive eruption continued, as they took a commanding 12-0 lead in the top of the 4th. Hardesty drove in the thirteenth run with a sac-fly in the top of the 5th. Gildea sat the side down in order after a tremendous play by Hattan to take game one 13-0.  

Game 1 Notables 

  • Jocelyn Franz was 2-3 with 1 RBI, a walk, and two runs scored.  

  • Audrey Gildea had one hit, scored three runs, and drove in 1 RBI. The freshman starred for five innings, allowing two hits, walking one, with two strikeouts. She secured her second complete game shutout, her first since the season opener against Mt. Aloysius, improving to 4-5.  

Game 2 – 13-2 (5 inn.) Win Over Ohio Wesleyan 

Wilmington jumped ahead with a six-run first inning over Ohio Wesleyan. Franz led off with a single and then stole second. Spears knocked her in with a single. With two outs, the Quakers scored five more runs. A single by Starnes added a run. Cline worked a walk to load the bases as Hattan brought them all home with three-run triple to right. Leading 5-0, Addysen Stevens singled home Hattan to score the sixth run.  

Two straight singles set up a two-run double for Starnes to extend the Quakers' lead to 8-0. The Cardinals got on the board with a single, a walk, and then a one-run single to make the score 8-1 in the bottom of the 2nd. Wilmington responded with two more runs. Eldridge plated Stevens with a sac-fly and then Spears scored on a wild pitch to go ahead 10-1.  

Belle Baughman relieved Gildea in the bottom of the 3rd and struck out two of the three batters to retire the side in order. Franz had a 2 RBI single to score Hattan and Cline, pushing Wilmington ahead 12-1. Ohio Wesleyan added one more run before Eldridge went deep in the top of the 5th as the Quakers clinched a 13-2 victory for the sweep. 

Game 2 Notables 

  • Eldridge finished 3-3 with a home run, 2 RBIs, and three runs scored. 

  • Franz went 2-4 with 2 RBIs, 1 stolen base, and one run. 

  • Spears was 2-4 with two runs scored and 1 RBI and a stolen base. 

  • Starnes went 2-2 with 3 RBIs, a run scored, and one walk. She stole one base. 

  • Hattan finished 2-3 with a triple, 3 RBIs, 2 runs scored, and a stolen base. 

  • Gildea, Hardesty, and Stevens each had one hit. 

  • Gildea and Baughman went two innings, combining for five strikeouts. Madde Geminden relieved the final inning.  

What's Up Next 

The Quakers head to Ada to take on Ohio Northern this weekend on Saturday for a doubleheader starting at 3:00 P.M.
