Dominant Pitching Performances Lead Quakers to Doubleheader Sweep Over Hiram

(HIRAM, Ohio)The Wilmington College baseball team swept the Hiram College Terriers Sunday afternoon in a doubleheader fueled behind two complete game pitching performances from Brad Miller and Trent Mendenhall. They won game one, 8-1 and game two, 4-1.

Game 1 – Wilmington Defeats Hiram, 8-1 (7 Innings)
The Quakers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. After J.C. Calhoun singled and stole second to start the frame, he was eventually knocked in by JP Donelan for the lead. Kyle Jennings singled in Donelan for the 2-0 advantage.

Wilmington used a Hiram error in the top of the third to fuel their two-run inning and lead 4-0. Depa had an RBI groundout in the inning before Jennings had a two-out RBI single into right center field.

Two more runs came in the fifth for the Quakers. An error led to a double which led to a Max Gildea RBI groundout for a 5-0 lead before Gabe McDowell made it 6-0 on a sacrifice fly.

Gildea had another RBI in the seventh frame with a single to right field before an Ethan Bunce bunt scored their final run of the game in an 8-1 victory.

Calhoun reached on a fielder's choice before stealing second base with two outs. A clutch JP Donelan double to left field brought in Calhoun to tie it.

The game stayed tied heading into the final frame. More two out magic followed for Wilmington. After Jake Stephens singled with one out, Braden Chambers singled later in the frame to put Stephens at third. The Quakers put pressure on the Terriers on the basepaths, as Chambers stole second before a throwing error allowed him to get to third and scored Stephens for the 2-1 lead. Another Hiram error brought in Chambers before Dominic Depa delivered the final hit for a 4-1 lead and victory.
