(WESTERVILLE, Ohio) - The Wilmington College baseball team dropped both games of their doubleheader to Otterbein on Saturday afternoon.
Game 1 – 11-1 (7 Inn.) Loss to Otterbein
The Quakers and Cardinals remained scoreless through 3.5 innings before the hosts jumped ahead in the bottom of the 4th. Otterbein tacked on two runs with back-to-back solo shots to take a 2-0 lead.
Wilmington responded in the top of the 5th. Kyle Jennings led off with a single and Zane Matthews singled with one out to put the pair on the corners. Jennings scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 2-1. Nathan Powers relieved Michael Cibulskas, as the hosts erupted for a six-run, five-hit bottom of the 5th to extend their lead to 8-1.
Otterbein added two more runs off a two-run home run in the bottom of the 6th. The Cardinals scored their eleventh run in the bottom of the 7th to take down the Quakers 11-1 in seven innings.
Game 1 Notables
Game 2 – 4-3 (10 inn.) Loss to Otterbein
JP Donelan smacked a two-out double in the top of the 1st but was stranded.
Javier Serantes held the Cardinals scoreless through four frames before the hosts tacked three runs against him in the bottom of the 5th. Dawson Blunt relieved Serantes trailing 1-0, before giving up a two-run single as Otterbein led 3-0 after five innings.
After having just two hits through eight innings, Wilmington worked a rally in the top of the 9th. J.C. Calhoun earned a walk after a nine-pitch at bat to lead off the inning. After two strikeouts, Calhoun stole second and Dominic Depa reached via error, allowing Calhoun to score. Kyle Jennings smoked an RBI single to right, scoring Depa. Trailing 3-2, Zane Matthews continued the rally with a single to put two runners on. After a pitching change Max Gildea singled through the left side to score Jennings and tie the game 3-3.
Calhoun reached base in the top of the 10th on a hit-by-pitch but was left on base. With two outs in the bottom of the 10th, the Cardinals hit a walk-off home run to take down the Quakers 4-3 in 10 innings.
