(WILMINGTON, Ohio) - After five runs in the first three innings, the Owls were able to silence the Quakers' bats, defeating Wilmington 8-1 on Sunday afternoon.
Max Gildea started for Wilmington and got two quick outs to open the game. A two-out single turned into a two-run home run for Kenyon, putting the visitors ahead 2-0. Wilmington went down in order in both the 1st and 2nd innings.
Kenyon tacked on three more runs in the top of the 3rd. A leadoff single, a hit-by-pitch, and another single put the visitors up 3-0. A sacrifice fly and a groundout brought in two more runs, putting Wilmington down 5-0. Hayden Koonce and J.C. Calhoun both singled with one out but were stranded in the bottom half.
JP Donelan led off the bottom of the 4th with a line drive single up the middle, but he too was stranded on base. Gildea settled in and fired off two more scoreless frames from the 4th and 5th, but the Owls added a sixth run in the top of the 6th. Braden Chambers opened the bottom half with a single, but a pop-out and an inning-ending double play got the Owls out.
Javier Serantes relieved Gildea in the top of the 7th and allowed two more runs before Liam Denehy relieved him to get the last out. Jarrett Morris fired off a scoreless inning in the top of the 8th. Wilmington scored its lone run in the bottom of the 9th. Chambers walked on four pitches, and Jake Stephens singled him over. A flyout advanced Chambers to third, and Cade Miller drove in Chambers with a fielder's choice, as the Quakers dropped their Sunday contest, 8-1.
