(SPRINGFIELD, Ohio) - In a back-and-forth offensive battle, the Quakers were outpaced late and dropped a 15–9 decision at Wittenberg on Tuesday evening.
The Quakers took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second. On a 0-1 count, Max Gildea crushed a home run to score the first run. Bobby Fleming worked a walk, and Kyle Jennings singled to right. Zane Matthews hit a sacrifice fly to plate Fleming.
The Tigers answered in the bottom of the 2nd with their own home run, a two-run blast to tie the game 2-2. Wilmington responded in the top of the 3rd. Braden Chambers got on base on a hit by pitch and then stole second. Dominic Depa worked a walk and a fielder's choice from Gildea scored Chambers. The hosts countered with four runs in the bottom of the 3rd. A hit by pitch, a double, and a groundout led to the tying run scoring. Liam Denehy relieved Michael Cibulskas, and an error scored the Tigers' fourth run. A pair of singles scored two more, giving Wittenberg a 6-3 lead.
Both teams went down in order the fifth inning. Wilmington scored their fourth run on a fielder's choice from Caleb Fugate, who brought Jennings home after his lead off with a single. The Tigers pounced in the bottom of the 6th, scoring five more runs on five hits, taking a commanding 11-4 lead. The green and white fought back in the top of the 7th. Depa and JP Donelan each singled to open the frame. Avery Battle, who pinch ran for Depa, scored on a passed ball. A groundout by Jennings scored Donelan and Jake Stephens singled home Bobby Fleming.
Leading 11-7, the hosts put up four more runs in the bottom of the 8th. The Quakers scored two runs in the top of the 9th. Donelan worked a walk and Eli Alexander singled, but Wilmington could not rally from the deficit, falling 15-9 on Tuesday night.
