Quakers Drop Saturday Doubleheader to Oberlin

(WILMINGTON, Ohio) - The Quakers dropped both of their contests to the Yeomen of Oberlin College, losing Game 1 4-1 and Game 2 7-3 on Saturday afternoon.  

Game 1 – 4-1 Loss Against Oberlin 

The Yeomen struck in the top of the 1st. A leadoff walk, followed by a single, put runners in scoring position. The next batter laced a single up the middle, scoring two to go up 2-0. Nathan Powers got two straight outs, before working out of a jam to hold the score at 2-0.  

Powers allowed a triple in the top of the 2nd, and then the runner scored on a wild pitch. Powers settled in, holding the Yeomen scoreless through the third and the fourth, but the Quakers went down in order through the first three innings. Wilmington got in the hit column in the bottom of the 4th, as Dominic Depa slugged a double to right field. JP Donelan reached on an error, moving Depa to third. Max Gildea and Kyle Jennings struck out and flied out, respectively, to close the inning.  

Oberlin walked and stole second to open the top of the 5th. Powers struck out the next batter, before a one-out single drove in the fourth run to put the visitors ahead 4-0. Braden Chambers smacked a double to lead off the bottom of the 5th, and Bobby Fleming drove him in with an RBI single to left center. Eli Hollingsworth walked, but the next three batters went down 1-2-3. 

The Quakers had traffic in the bottom of the 6th. Kyle Jennings singled with two outs, followed by Chambers reaching on a hit by pitch, before the third out was recorded at third base. Bobby Fleming sat down the Yeomen in order in the top of the 7th, before the Quakers went down in order as well, falling 4-1.  

Game 1 Notables 

  • Braden Chambers ripped a double and scored one run while going 1-2 at the plate. 

  • Brad Miller pitched two scoreless innings in relief, striking out two batters. 

Game 2 – 7-3 Loss Against Oberlin  

Wilmington got on the board first in the bottom of the 2nd. Max Gildea opened the inning with a double down the left field line, and Brody Julian drove him in with an RBI single up the middle. The Yeomen answered in the top of the 3rd with a one-out double. After recording the second out, Michael Cibulskas allowed a double to left center, scoring the tying run.  

Oberlin went big in the top of the 4th, scoring five runs with two outs. Cibulskas got two straight flyouts, before walking the third batter of the inning on a full count. Three straight singles brought in two more runs, putting the visitors ahead 3-1. In a full count, Cibulskas gave up a three-run home run to left field, making it 6-1 in favor of Oberlin. 

The Quakers inched back in the bottom of the inning as JP Donelan opened with a single through the left side. Gildea, on a 2-2 count, went deep down the left field line with his first home run of the year, cutting the deficit to 6-3. Wilmington's pitching held the Yeomen at bay until the top of the 6th. Brent Case relieved Trent Mendenhall and allowed a two-out RBI-single to put the visitors ahead 7-3. Josh Ruwe relieved Case to get the final out, stranding three runners on base. Wilmington could not mount a comeback, falling 7-3.  

Game 2 Notables 

  • Max Gildea led the Quakers at the dish, going 3-3 with 2 RBIs and two runs scored. Gildea slugged his first home run of the season, along with his third double.  

  • JP Donelan went 1-3, scoring a run for the Quakers.  

  • Julian Brody finished 1-2, bringing in an RBI.  

  • Trent Mendenhall fired off a scoreless inning in relief, allowing two hits but striking out one.  

  • Josh Ruwe pitched 1.1 innings in relief, striking out two and allowing no runs.
