Back-and-Forth Affair Ends in 6-4 Loss for Quakers at Centre

(DANVILLE, Ky.) - The Quakers fall to the Colonels of Centre College 6-4 on Tuesday night

Wilmington struck first against Centre College. J.C. Calhoun reached on an error as Dominic Depa singled through the left side to put two on base. On a 1-1 count, Max Gildea singled to the left fielder, scoring Calhoun and moving Depa to second.

Bobby Fleming made his first start on the bump for the Quakers. He took care of the first two batters he faced before allowing a single until he escaped the inning. The Quakers' bats stayed hot in the top of the 2nd. Brayden Chambers and Eli Hollingsworth hit back-to-back singles. Zane Matthews grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring Chambers to put Wilmington ahead 2-0.

A leadoff walk put Fleming behind to open the latter half of the 2nd. The next batter doubled, scoring the Colonels' first run of the game. The third batter of the inning singled to right field, bringing in the tying run. With two outs, Centre laced a ball through the six hole, scoring the go ahead run to lead 3-2.

The Quakers responded in the top of the 3rd. JP Donelan singled back up the middle and Gildea walked, putting two men on base. Kyle Jennings walked to load the bases. Chambers swung away 0-0 and drove in Donelan with a sacrifice fly to tie the score 3-3. The Colonels answered again in the bottom of the 3rd with a leadoff single. Fleming got the next two outs before giving up a single, putting the hosts back ahead 4-3.

Zane Matthews led off the top of the 4th with a hit by pitch. After both Stephens and Calhoun got out, Depa singled through the middle, scoring Matthews to tie the at pair 4-4. Fleming k'd the first batter in the bottom of the 4th before giving a double. He got the next batter to popup before allowing a single, giving the Colonels a 5-4 lead. The righty walked the next batter, prompting Trent Mendenhall to come in for relief, getting the last out of the inning.

The pair remained scoreless until the bottom of the 8th. With two outs, the Colonels had a runner on third base after a balk and the batter walked. Centre got into a pickle, and after a throwaway, the Colonels scored a sixth run for insurance. The Quakers went down in order in the top of the 9th, falling to Centre 6-4 on Tuesday night.
