Wilmington Unable to Overcome Mount Union on Saturday Afternoon

(ALLIANCE, Ohio) - The Quakers fought hard through the first half into the second half but could not overcome the Purple Raiders, falling 80-57 on Saturday afternoon.

Wilmington took a brief 4-0 lead, courtesy of an Olivia Trusty free throw and a Stephanie Altstaetter three ball. Altstaetter's hook shot fell, putting the Quakers ahead 6-5. The Purple Raiders snapped off a 10-0 run before Trusty dropped a layup in, trailing 15-8 with 3:10 to go in the first quarter. Trusty then made two free throws, and Gabby Russell drove and scored to tie the two 15-15 with 29 seconds left. Mount Union answered with a three to close the quarter, leading 18-15.

Trusty continued her career day with a layup to open the second quarter. The Purple Raiders once again jumped off on an 11-0 run until Jazz Johnson knocked down a three pointer, to cut the deficit to 29-20. Johnson made another three after a Purple Raider basket to put Wilmington within eight with 4:10 left. Russell then cashed in a three for the Quakers, but Mount Union's offense remained in control as the hosts took a 39-27 lead heading into halftime.

The Purple Raiders went on a 7-0 spree to open the second half until Trusty knocked down two free throws. Sierra McCoin knocked down a three to put Wilmington down 48-34 with 5:55 left. Taija Walker scored to cut the deficit to 12 points with under four minutes left in the third quarter. McCoin hit another three with a minute left, and Johnson hit a free throw with 25 seconds left to send the Quakers into the fourth quarter down 59-45.

Mount Union extended their lead in the fourth quarter to 68-45 before Johnson made two free throws. Johnson cashed in a three just a minute later. The Purple Raiders' offense was just too much for the Quakers, as the green and white fell 80-57 on the road.
