(NEW CONCORD, Ohio) - Wilmington's fourth quarter lead was spoiled by Muskingum's offense in the final minutes on Wednesday night, falling 80-64.
Down by seven early in the first quarter, Gabby Russell drained a three with 5:49 remaining to cut the deficit to four. Olivia Trusty scored back-to-back layups, but Muskingum answered with a three-pointer. Stephanie Altstaetter knocked down her layup with 1:55 in the first for the final score of the first quarter.
Muskingum opened the second quarter with a layup until Russell answered with her own. Jazz Johnson made two free throws and then cashed in a three pointer to give Wilmington a 21-19 lead with 8:11 left. Russell hit two free throws to extend the lead 23-19. The Fighting Muskies went on a 9-4 run to take a lead, until Sierra McCoin nailed a three to retake the lead 30-28. The hosts retook a 40-37 lead with under a minute to go. Bailey Eddleman made one free throw until the Fighting Muskies scored a buzzer beater, taking a 42-38 lead into the break.
The Fighting Muskies jumped out on a 5-0 run to take a 47-38 to open the third quarter. Reese Pittman kicked off the scoring for the Quakers with a three, assisted by Johnson. Russell responded with a layup, and Johnson went coast-to-coast herself, cutting the deficit to two. After Johnson went one for two from the line, Altstaetter scored a layup to give Wilmington a 48-47 leaf with 3:32 left. Muskingum tied the game 52-52 with 1:23 left in the third, but at the buzzer McCoin got her jumper to fall to take a lead 54-52 heading into the fourth quarter.
McCoin picked up right where she left by draining a three to push Wilmington ahead 57-52. The Fighting Muskies snapped off an 11-2 run in three minutes, taking a 63-59 lead with 6:23. After a pair of free throws, Altstaetter made two in a row to put the Quakers within two trailing 65-63 with 3:56 to go. The hosts scored four straight points to extend the lead with under three minutes left. Muskingum's offense ended up rattling off an 11-0 run to defeat Wilmington 80-64.
