(ALLIANCE, Ohio) - In a hard-fought, back-and-forth contest, the Quakers ultimately fell in overtime 90-87 against the Purple Raiders on the road Saturday afternoon.
Both Wilmington and Mount Union traded baskets to open the first half of the game. Leading 8-6 after a layup by Domenic Farley, the Purple Raiders jumped ahead 13-8. The hosts remained five points ahead of the Quakers, until Zach King scored a layup at the 10:56 mark to cut the deficit to three, 20-17. Mount Union inched ahead, leading 25-17 just a minute later.
A Ben Golan layup kicked off a Quakers' 8-0 run. After a steal by Elijah Cathey, he nailed a three pointer, and Izaiah Cathey had a steal and scored on the next possession. With 6:44 left, Elijah Cathey cashed in a three, assisted by Golan, to take a 27-25 lead.
Four minutes later, the Purple Raiders retook the lead, 37-27 with 2:35 remaining. Wilmington closed out the first half on a 9-1 run, kicked off again by Golan, who tipped in a miss, had a steal and scored a layup, and then Elijah Cathey drained a three. With three seconds left Farley beat the buzzer with a layup, sending the Quakers into the half down 38-37.
A three pointer by Izaiah Cathey put the green and white ahead early to open the second half. After trading leads, Wilmington took an eight-point lead from a Carson Miles layup with 11:04 to go. Mount Union crawled within one point of the Quakers' lead, but a Farley layup pushed the lead up to seven with just under seven full minutes left. Trailing 68-60, the Purple Raiders clawed back to take a 71-69 lead with 3:20 remaining.
Wilmington trailed by as many as seven points with less than two minutes to go. A three by Farley, followed by a layup after an Elijah Cathey steal put the Quakers within two. With 45 seconds left, Gabe Green drew a steal and scored, knotting the teams at 76-76. Mount Union missed a tip-in as time expired, sending the two into overtime.
The teams remained deadlocked two minutes into overtime. Zach King drew an and-one opportunity and converted at the line, giving Wilmington an 81-80 lead. A steal and layup by Izaiah Cathey gave Wilmington an 85-83 lead with 2:15 remaining. After the Purple Raiders made two free throws, Carson Miles knocked down a jumper to tie the pair at 87-87 with 40 seconds left. Forced to foul, Mount Union made two free throws and after a Wilmington miss, made another to take a 90-87 lead with 14 seconds left. The Quakers had two chances in the final seconds, but Farley and Matt DeBrosse could not get their shots to fall.
