(COLUMBUS, Ohio) - Quakers drop conference matchup Wednesday night at Capital 76-46.
The visiting Quakers and host Comets were neck and neck throughout the first quarter. Jazz Johnson hit a three pointer to put Wilmington within one 10-9 with six minutes left. Capital went on a run, but Stephanie Altstaetter responded with an and-one and another layup to keep the Quakers within one point again. Leading 15-14, the Comets went on a 10-2 jolt to close out the quarter with a 25-16 lead.
Capital's first quarter momentum carried over as the Comets scored six straight points to take a 31-16 lead before Olivia Trusty scored a layup to cut the lead to 31-18. The Comets maintained their lead, jumping ahead by 18 points 41-23 with two minutes left. Wilmington found themselves down 20 until Altstaetter sunk a free throw, and Katie Dryer made a tip-in to go into the half trailing 45-28.
Both the Quakers and Comets struggled in a low-scoring third quarter. Wilmington opened the second half with six straight points coming from Johnson and Altstaetter to cut the deficit to 13, 47-34. Capital scored their first points six minutes into the third quarter. Layups by Johnson put Wilmington down 11 until the Comets pushed ahead to lead 52-38 at the end of the third.
After only scoring seven points in the third quarter, Capital erupted for 24 points in the fourth quarter while limiting Wilmington to just eight points. The Comets continued to outshoot the Quakers as the hosts pulled ahead, closing the final quarter on a 20-4 run to take down Wilmington 76-46.
