(WILMINGTON, Ohio) - Wilmington falls at home against Mount Union 79-44 on Saturday afternoon.
The Quakers started with a strong first quarter. Sierra McCoin opened the game by draining a three from deep and snagging a steal on the next possession. After a turnover by the Purple Raiders, Jazz Johnson nailed a three pointer to put Wilmington ahead. Katie Dryer had a steal and on the ensuing possession McCoin swished another deep three. Johnson forced a turnover and scored a layup on the fastbreak.
Olivia Trusty responded with a three of her own after a miss by Mount Union, putting Wilmington ahead 15-7. Gabby Russell capped the great first quarter for the Quakers with another three pointer to give the green and white an 18-11 lead.
Mount Union responded well in the second quarter, going on their own offensive tear. The Purple Raiders scored five straight points until Stephanie Altstaetter knocked down two free throws to keep the Quakers ahead 21-18. The visitors went on a 9-1 run to take a 27-22 lead over the hosts after Wilmington was unable to get their shots to fall. Altstaetter and Russell each scored layups to put the Quakers within one.
After a Mount Union layup, Altstaetter responded with a deep three to tie the score 29-29 with a minute left. The Purple Raiders knocked down a three and closed the first half on a 7-0 run to lead 36-29 heading into the break.
The Purple Raiders continued their offensive run in the third quarter. Ashton Harris sank both free throws to put Wilmington within ten points until another three pointer by Mount Union. Dryer forced a steal and went one-for-two at the free throw line with five minutes to go. Trailing by 15, Olivia Trusty scored a layup and McCoin knocked down another impressive three to cut the deficit to 13. The visitors scored five straight to end the third quarter with a 58-39 lead.
Wilmington was unable to shoot as efficiently in the first half, but Russell opened the fourth quarter with a three pointer and Altstaetter had a layup on the next possession. The Purple Raiders held onto their lead and defeated the Quakers 79-44.
