(MARIETTA, Ohio) – The Wilmington College men's basketball team won their first game on the road at Marietta College this afternoon in over 10 years, 85-77, with their last win coming on February 27th, 2014.
The Quakers dominated the first half, rolling out to a 12-1 lead over the first four minutes of the contest. The Cathey brothers,
Izaiah Cathey and
Elijah Cathey scored every point during this stretch for Wilmington, with the pair scoring six points each.
The Pioneers cut the lead down to six, but the Quakers pushed it back out to 19 points after a Matthew DeBrosse jumper made the score 32-13. They led by as many as 23 points in the half and held a 48-30 lead heading into the locker room.
Wilmington continued to hold a steady lead in the second half, taking a 20 point advantage at 63-43 with 11:49 to play. This is where Marietta jumped back into the game with a 24-7 run to cut the lead down to three points at 70-67 with 4:52 remaining.
The Quakers hung tough over the final few minutes of play and never surrendered the lead or let the Pioneers tie it up, despite getting the lead down to just one on three different occasions. They knocked down five free throws down the stretch to come away with the victory.
Notables
- For the third time this season, senior Domenic Farley scored over 20 points, as he went 8-13 from the field and dropped 23 points. This is his ninth game with over 10 points this season for the Quakers.
- Elijah Cathey scored 16 points and Izaiah Cathey scored 13 points.
- The Cathey brothers and Zach McGuirt tied for the team lead with seven rebounds each.
- Farley had a team high two assists.
- Carson Miles tied for the game high with two steals.
- Three Quakers had one block.
- Wilmington shot 81% from the free throw line, knocking down 17 of 21 attempts. This is their second-best free throw percentage of the season (81.8% at Adrian College).
