Altstaetter's Double-Double and Clutch Free Throws Push Wilmington Past Heidelberg

(TIFFIN, Ohio) - The Quakers defeated the Student Princes of Heidelberg University 66-60 on Saturday afternoon with clutch free throw shooting and defense in the final quarter.

The Quakers jumped out on a 7-2 run to open the first quarter. Stephanie Altstaetter and Gabby Russell traded layups as Sierra McCoin nailed a three during the run. After a layup by Olivia Trusty, the Student Princes clawed back. The hosts tied the score 11-11 with 3:50 left in the first quarter. Jazz Johnson and Altstaetter each made back-to-back layups but Heidelberg's offense shooting continued as they led 17-15 heading into the second.

Wilmington opened the quarter with seven straight free throws. Altstaetter went 4/4 and Johnson went 2/2. Taija Walker made her first free throw but missed the second, giving the green and white a 22-19 lead with 6:33 to go. Walker then made a jumper a minute later to retake the lead for the Quakers. Heidelberg kept the score close, turning a two-point deficit into a 29-25 lead late. Altstaetter's free throw shooting continued her impressive efficiency, as the senior hit two late to cut the Student Prince's halftime lead to 29-27.

After a Heidelberg basket, Russell scored four straight points to tie the score 31-31. The Quakers and Student Princes remained neck and neck throughout a high-scoring third quarter. Trailing 37-34, Bailey Eddleman scored a layup, and Katie Dryer forced a steal and scored a layup to put the Quakers ahead. With 3:37 left, Jazz Johnson converted her and one attempt to keep Wilmington in the lead. Johnson's consistent shooting tied the score 46-46, making three free throws to head into the fourth quarter.

Stephanie Altstaetter opened the fourth quarter with bang, scoring two consecutive layups to put Wilmington ahead 50-46. Dryer hit two free throws to push Wilmington ahead 52-46. The Student Princes responded with a 7-0 run to retake the lead, until Altstaetter sank two more free throws to reach 21 points and a 54-53 lead with 3:44 left. The senior followed up a layup a minute later to extend the lead by three points.

Russell hit a free throw late, and Sierra McCoin made both attempts to give Wilmington a six-point lead under a minute left. After a timeout, with ice in her veins, McCoin made six consecutive free throws to ice the game for Wilmington with a 66-60 win on the road against Heidelberg.
