(WILMINGTON, Ohio) - The Quakers lost their first half lead and fell to visiting Capital 60-51.
Wilmington kicked the game off in electric fashion. After a layup by Capital, Gabby Russell nailed a deep three for the Quakers. Stephanie Altstaetter had a layup and then immediately had two back-to-back monstrous blocks. The senior followed up her two straight swats by draining a wide open three with zero hesitation.
Trailing by one, Altstaetter drove in and scored, drawing a foul for an and-one as she made the free throw. The Comets missed on their next possession and again, with zero hesitation, Altstaetter cashed in another deep three. Wilmington closed their well-played first quarter leading 18-12.
The visiting Comets opened the second quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 20-18 lead. Russell tied the score again and after a rebound by Olivia Trusty, Sierra McCoin swooshed a three. Capital retook the lead until Trusty dropped in a layup assisted by Jazz Johnson. With 1:17 remaining in the second quarter, McCoin buried a three from downtown. Johnson stole the ball on the next possession and found Russell for an easy two points as the Quakers went into halftime leading 30-26.
Capital once again opened the third quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 32-30 lead. Russell then scored six straight points from two baskets and a pair of free throws. Going back and forth with the Comets, Trusty added four points with a layup and a tip-in with under a minute left in the third. Altstaetter sent Wilmington into the fourth quarter with two free throws to extend the lead to 42-38.
Gabby Russell opened the fourth quarter with an exclamation point as the guard drilled back-to-back threes as the Quakers led 48-44 with 8:24 left. Capital then went on a 10-1 run, leading 54-49 with only 4:14 to play. Wilmington's offense went cold over the fourth quarter, as the next points came in the final 1:16 with a tip-in by Trusty again. Forced to foul late, the Comets knocked down their free throws to narrowly escape with a 60-51 win over the Quakers.
