(TIFFIN, Ohio) – The Wilmington College men's basketball team traveled to Heidelberg University this afternoon to battle the Student Princes in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) action. The Quakers fell in a close contest, 92-90, nearly clawing back from an eight-point halftime deficit.
Both teams played great over the first 10 minutes of the game, scoring 49 combined points, as Heidelberg led 26-23. Juniors
Ben Golan and
Elijah Cathey were the top scorers for Wilmington during this stretch as Golan had eight points and Cathey seven.
The Student Princes stretched their lead to 11 points at 34-23 with 8:47 to play in the half. A 21-11 run ensued for the Quakers to cut the lead to one point at 45-44 with 3:40 remaining in the first half.
Carson Miles and Golan both scored four points during the rally. The Student Princes pushed their lead back out to eight for a 55-47 halftime lead.
Wilmington started the second half with a 14-5 flurry to take a one point, 61-60 advantage.
Izaiah Cathey and Golan had four points to get the Quakers right back into the game.
Both teams traded buckets throughout the half and were tied at 84-84 with 2:55 remaining in the contest. A 5-0 stretch ensued for Heidelberg and gave them an 89-84 lead with 1:35 to play. Two
Domenic Farley free throws and a bucket by Golan got Wilmington right back in it at 89-88. The Student Princes hung on however, using a jumper and a free throw to put the game away at 92-90.
Notables
- For the second game in a row, five Quakers scored in double digits, led by Ben Golan's season high 21 points on 7-11 shooting.
- Izaiah Cathey and Gabe Green had great days from the field, going 8-11 and 6-7 respectively for 19 and 16 points.
- Rounding out the double-digit scorers were Elijah Cathey with 13 and Domenic Farley with 12.
- Elijah Cathey grabbed a game high eight rebounds while Golan led the team with five assists.
- Izaiah Cathey had three blocks and three steals in an all-around great performance while Matt DeBrosse tied him for the game high with three steals.
- For the fifth time this season and second time in conference play, Wilmington shot 50% or over from the field at 50.7%.
- The difference in the game came at the free throw line where the Student Princes shot five more free throws (25 to 20) and made five more free throws (20 to 15) than the Quakers.
