Game Recap: Baseball |

Early Leads Don't Hold as Quakers Lose a Pair to Heidelberg

(WILMINGTON, Ohio) – The Wilmington College baseball team lost a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) games to the visiting Heidelberg University Student Princes Tuesday afternoon at Tewksbury-Delaney Field. Game one was 8-5, while game two ended in a 15-3 defeat.

Game One – Heidelberg defeats Wilmington, 8-5
The Quakers took an early 2-0 lead over the Student Princes in the first inning of game one. An out started the inning, before two walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases with just one out. After a strikeout, Gabe McDowell came through with a big, two-RBI single up the middle for the 2-0 lead.

Wilmington had several chances to extend their lead over the coming innings, but a pair of double plays and a fly out with the bases loaded ended their rallies. This allowed the Student Princes to tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the seventh inning on a two-out homerun.

Heidelberg used a six run eighth inning to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish for the remainder of the game. Wilmington loaded the bases in the ninth and had an RBI walk and fielder's choice before scoring on an error but couldn't complete the comeback.

Game One Notables
  • Gabe McDowell led the Quakers with two hits and two RBI.

Game Two – Heidelberg defeats Wilmington, 15-3
Just like in game one, the Quakers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. This time it came on a two-out Max Gildea homerun, his first of the season. The Student Princes took the lead in the top of the third frame with three runs.

Wilmington trailed 3-2, until a six run sixth inning for Heidelberg put the game out of reach at 9-2. The Quakers had runners in scoring position in the bottom of the sixth and bottom of the eighth.

They scored their final run of the game in the ninth on a sacrifice fly from Dylan Montgomery after Caleb Fugate and Jay Utterdyke both singled to start the inning.
