Softball Loses a Pair of Thrillers to Mount Union Friday at Home

(WILMINGTON, Ohio) – The Wilmington College softball team hosted the University of Mount Union Friday afternoon for an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) doubleheader against the Purple Raiders. They lost both games in extra innings, 4-2 and 6-3.

The Quakers now sit at 11-16 overall this season and 4-10 in the OAC.

Game One – Mount Union defeats Wilmington, 4-2 (8 Innings)
The Quakers had a great chance to score in the first inning as Jocelyn Franz roped a triple down the right field line with one out, but a strikeout and pop out ended the frame. They had a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the third with one out but wouldn't bring her home.

The Purple Raiders grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning before an inside the park homerun brought the score to 2-0 in the fifth.

Wilmington answered right back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth. An error and single had runners at first and second with one out before a sacrifice bunt put the runners at second and third with two outs. Franz came through with a double down the left field line to tie the game at 2-2.

Mount Union loaded the bases with no one out in the top of the sixth. A pop out gave the Quakers an out and some hope. Addysen Stevens followed with a diving catch in center field and a toss to second base to get the force out and a double play to get out of the jam.

The Purple Raiders loaded the bases again in the seventh and forced a Quakers pitching change to Audrey Patel. She hit a batter but forced a huge two out ground out to her in the circle to get out of the inning with no runs allowed.

Mount Union rallied with two outs in the first extra inning, scoring two and bringing the score to 4-2 and winning the game.

Game One Notables
  • Jocelyn Franz led Wilmington with two hits and had their two extra base hits with a triple and a double. She also drove in both runs.
  • Three other Quakers had one hit.
  • Addysen Stevens stole a base.
  • Makenzie O'Neil threw a great game in the circle, only allowing two runs on eight hits over 6.1 innings and striking out one Purple Raider.

Game Two – Mount Union defeats Wilmington, 6-3 (11 Innings)
Mount Union struck first in game two in the third inning with a double and single to take a 1-0 lead. A throwing error on a sacrifice bunt allowed the Purple Raiders second run to come in during the fourth inning for a 2-0 lead.

Wilmington tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth. Jocelyn Franz singled and got out on a fielder's choice to put Judaea Wilson on the bases, who reached second on a wild pitch. A walk followed before Samantha Schwab singled into left center field for the Quakers first run of the game. Alasandra Spears singled down the right field line with the bases loaded later in the inning to tie the game at 2-2.

Mount Union took the lead with a run in the fifth to bring it to 3-2. This lead held until the bottom of the seventh inning. Spears began the inning with a double down the left field line, and she would score on an Addysen Stevens one out single into center field later in the frame. The game went into extra innings.

Wilmington got out of a jam that had a Purple Raider advance to third base in the eighth. Neither team could scratch across a run until Mount Union scored three in the top of the 11th, making it 6-3. The Quakers singled twice in the bottom of the 11th but couldn't bring home a run in the loss.
