Two Out Hits Lead Wilmington Past Ohio Wesleyan On the Road

(DELAWARE, Ohio) – The Wilmington College baseball team defeated the Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops Thursday afternoon on the road, 7-6. The Quakers held a 7-4 lead in the top of the seventh inning before Ohio Wesleyan made it interesting over the final three frames, but the Quakers shut the door in the ninth for their ninth win of the season.

Wilmington got on the board with a single run in the top of the first inning. After a pair of ground outs, a Dominic Depa double down the left field line kept the inning alive. He advanced to third on a passed ball before a Max Gildea single into right field gave Wilmington the lead.

The Battling Bishops answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to grab a 2-1 advantage. A two out rally followed for the Quakers in the top of the second. A Hayden Koonce single and a pair of ground outs helped advanced him to second base before Caleb Fugate came through with an RBI single up the middle for a 2-2 tie. Wilmington loaded the bases later in the inning but couldn't bring home any more runs.

The Quakers had runners in scoring position in the third and fourth innings but wouldn't score again until the top of the sixth. Once again, they came through with two outs. Braden Chambers singled to start the inning and was bunted over before a ground out put him at third with two outs. Calhoun doubled into left field to retake the lead at 3-2.

The Battling Bishops took back the lead with two runs in the sixth for a 4-3 lead. The Quakers didn't blink though and answered with four in the top of the seventh. Like they did all game, they rallied with two outs. It started with an Avery Battle double, a hit by pitch, and a walk to load the bases and force a pitching change. JP Donelan walked to bring in the first run before Fugate hit a two-run single into left field and Calhoun singled up the middle for a 7-4 advantage.

Ohio Wesleyan cut the lead to one with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it 7-6. Brad Miller pitched a scoreless eighth before Donelan worked around a pair of two out hits to pick up the save for the Quakers in the ninth.
