Baseball Falters On the Road at Mount Union Friday

(ALLIANCE, Ohio) – The Wilmington College baseball team traveled to the University of Mount Union Friday afternoon for an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) doubleheader against the Purple Raiders. They lost both games, 14-4 and 14-5.

Game One – Mount Union defeats Wilmington, 14-4
The Quakers fell behind 5-0 early in game one. Kyle Jennings doubled with one out in the first but wouldn't come around to score. J.C. Calhoun was hit by a pitch and stole second to put a runner in scoring position in the third, but a fly out ended the frame.

They cut the lead to 5-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Just like in their game yesterday against Ohio Wesleyan University, they did their damage with two outs. After a single and a pair of walks, they loaded the bases with two outs. JP Donelan came through with a huge single to left field to bring in their two runs.

Calhoun singled and stole second to put himself into scoring position in the fifth. A ground out and passed ball brought him in to score their third run of the game. Wilmington's final run of the contest came in the sixth. A pair of singles combined with a pair of outs had runners at first and second base with two down. Calhoun singled into right field to cut the lead to 8-4.

Game One Notables
  • J.C. Calhoun, Dominic Depa, and JP Donelan all had two hits in the game.
  • Donelan drove in a pair of runs while Calhoun had one RBI.
  • Kyle Jennings had their lone extra base hit.
  • Calhoun stole two bases and is 14-14 this season on the base paths.

Game Two – Mount Union defeats Wilmington, 14-5 (7 Innings)
James Crowe gave Wilmington a 1-0 lead in the first inning after a two-out RBI double into left center field to score Kyle Jennings, who had walked earlier in the frame. A seven-run bottom of the third inning doomed Wilmington and made the score 7-1.

Their final runs of the game came in the top of the seventh. An Eli Hollingsworth walk, and Eli Alexander double had runners on second and third with no outs. They both scored on an error before Hayden Koonce singled later in the inning to put runners at first and third with one out. Their final run scored via an error by the catcher as Koonce stole second base to bring the final score to 15-4.
