Hit Clinic Drives Quakers to Sweep of Capital

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) The visiting Wilmington Quakers (11-14, 4-8 OAC) put on a hit clinic against the host Capital Comets (12-16, 5-7 OAC), tallying 31 hits across 11 innings in a run-rule doubleheader sweep with scores of 14-6 and 11-1.

The Quakers tallied at least one hit in every inning of game one, a five-inning game, and game two, a six-inning game, and had runners in scoring position in all but one inning. In addition, the Quakers hit three doubles in each of the two games.

Wilmington also saw eight stolen bases in the first game, for ten on the day, with three players swiping two bases – Judaea Wilson, Jocelyn Franz, and Haley Johnson.

Defensively, the Quakers were stellar, turning three double plays, including third baseman Alasandra Spears snagging a pair of line drives and stepping on third.

Game One

Kori Cornett got the scoring going for the Quakers with a second inning two-out single, with two runners on. Cornett's hit deflects off the pitcher's glove to the second baseman and slows the ball enough for Cornett to leg out that single and score Ashley Jo Hardesty, with Spears advancing to third.

In the third, Johnson drove a double into the right-center gap to put her on second, and on the next pitch, Samantha Schwab delivered a double down the left field line, scoring Johnson.

Two batters later, Rachel Berry takes a 0-1 pitch past the shortstop, diving into center field, scoring Schwab from third.

In the fourth inning, Johnson, with runners at second and third, would put one past the shortstop to bring home Franz from third.

After Schwab draws a six-pitch walk to load the bases and a pitching change, Hardesty welcomes Addi Parker by sending the first pitch scorching through the left side, scoring Wilson and Johnson to tie the game at 6.

Just four pitches later, Spears sends one flying to the fence in right center, scoring Schwab to give the Quakers their first lead of the game.

Three pitches later, Berry drives the ball into deep center field for a double, scoring Hardesty. A throwing error on the play would allow Berry to advance to third and score Spears.

Addysen Stevens bounces the 0-1 pitch over the third baseman to score Berry for the 10-6 lead.

The first out of the fourth came when Stevens got caught stealing third, which enabled Cornett to end up at second following a walk.

Wilson would send an 0-1 pitch flying through the middle, allowing Cornett and Franz, who got on via a dropped fly ball, to make the score 12-6.

Johnson would get a double down the left field line to score Wilson.

And now with two outs, Hardesty would then send the ball to right center to score Johnson for a 14-6 lead.

In a long fourth inning, the Quakers sent up 15 batters, scoring 11 off nine hits, three walks, two errors, and only leaving one on base, threatening the Comets with a shortened game.

In the bottom of the fourth, starter Makenzie O'Neil gave up a double and two walks before passing the ball to Audrey Patel in an unenviable situation.

With bases loaded, Patel got Michelle Brumfield to line out to Spears at third and positioned Spears to step on third for the double play. Patel got Reagan Irons to pop up to her to get the Quakers and O'Neil out of a precarious jam completely unscathed.

Patel faced five batters and got all of them out over two innings.

O'Neil gets the win, going three innings, giving up six runs across nine hits and three walks, while striking out two.

Johnson went 3-for-3, with a walk, scoring three runs, and driving in two.

Hardesty went 3-for-4, driving in three and scoring twice.

GAME TWO

Game two began with a big second inning from the Quakers, continuing the momentum gained at the end of game one.

After a pair of walks to open the second, Berry smacks the first pitch back up the middle to score Hardesty from second.

Two batters later, with no outs and the bases loaded, Cornett slaps a 3-2 pitch through the hole on the left side of the infield, driving in Spears for the second run of the inning and leaving the bases loaded.

After a fielder's choice and a strikeout from Franz and Wilson, respectively, Johnson faces a full count with two outs and drives the pitch past the shortstop into left field, bringing in Stevens and Cornett.

Then, in the fourth, with Wilson on second, Schwab pokes one through the middle into center field, driving in Wilson for the 5-0 lead.

Next up in the fifth, Stevens puts one over the third baseman down the left field line to drive in Berry, two pitches after Berry punched one into left center for a double.

The sixth is where the Quakers put this game on ice.

With one out and the bases loaded, Emrie Schmidt draws the walk to score Hardesty, followed by Cornett blasting one to the left field fence, bringing in Berry and Spears to make it a 9-0 lead.

Lauryn Humphrey pinch hit for Franz, drew a walk, Franz re-enters to run for Humphrey, loading the bases, and the Comets make a pitching change, bringing back in game two starter Alyssa Miller relieving Isabel Sayre, who started game one and came in relief of Miller in the third.

Nothing changed for Miller as Wilson drew a walk to bring in Stevens, who re-entered the game for Schmidt, for the 10-0 lead.

One pitch after Wilson draws her walk, Johnson drops one in front of the center fielder to bring home Cornett for an 11-0 lead.

That lead would be more than enough as starter Belle Baughman goes the distance, pitching four innings of no-hit ball, yielding only three hits, two walks, and one run.

Cornett would go 3-5 with a double, driving in three and scoring two.

Johnson went 2-5 with three runs batted in.

Spears went 2-3 with two runs scored and a walk.

WHAT'S UP NEXT

The Quakers will host the Mount Union Purple Raiders on Friday for a doubleheader, first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm. Wilmington lost both games to the Purple Raiders and will be seeking their first win against Mount Union since 2017.
